Basically i've ordered this record because of great interest for its second track after listening to some samples (the remainder didn't appear disgusting either !), without knowing the concept hidden behind him. HKDJS, the label, being also a "training center" inviting djs who wish "taking a step further by producing their own music" (which I assume is not for free, hehe). The student's works have gained recognition by being released here and there i.e the first track of the comp @ Shellsplinta Records (Switzerland).. The idea came to suggest their own serie featuring selected tracks developped in the center.

They are working on various hardware configurations but focus on Reason software to build up their tracks. Credits in the booklet are detailing the stuff used for each track.. and the records is shipped with a PropellerHead sofwares Demo CD (Reason 2.5, ReCycle 2.0, ReBirth 2.0 et Reload + Reason tutorial).. Which is quite uncommon, you'll agree ! The whole in a digipack filled with decent graphics.

I didn't know about any of the artists listed on this record before listening to it.. Now believe me I will pay some attention on the future works of most of them ! Here they are :

1. Tp ::: Spirit Of The Mountain
2. Beat Machine ::: Frequency High
3. Tp ::: Blue Tavern
4. Gary Leung ::: Divine
5. Iceman ::: Emotional Progress
6. Fish ::: Tubo
7. Ray`iio ::: Amethyst
8. Mike Yung ::: 911
9. Tp ::: First Step For P

Now let's give it a listen..

01. Spirit Of The Mountain opens this comp with some hardhouse rhythmic build-ups and some female indian chants. The dialogue between them is rich and one don't get bored. The hypnotic ambiance takes off in an interesting way reaching a climax and directly followed by a long break. But it is not a break, it is a promise ! Full of suspense and launching the final part of the track, deep but not deadening.. A good opening for this record !

02. Now is a monstruous elektro track (the one that made me push the 'order' button) that have everything to please the amateurs of such vibrations with a The Delta & co touch ! Nice story between the rhythmics and the flow both aerial and aquatic punctuated twice by a well made vocoder sample.. And no doubt : the elektro beat is danceable until total exhaustion !

03. Tszpun again (TP) here for a chill track the most succeded of ! It gains slowly but surely in intensity and is decorated by a piano which will tenderize more the "melomanes".. The whole is very floating and purified.. Peacefull.

04. Now more pression, please ! Gary Leung suggests a soft-but-finally-not-that-much track filled with good ideas. Evolving smoothly and cadenced by a very dry kick. It contrasts a lot with the other elements of the bass line drive, somehow in withdrawal. Hypnotic and serene, it is exactly the kind of track perfect to start a downhill to some chill out after a twisted night ! The final part is quite intense, the whole track is very good.

05. Iceman also suggests a track "between two waters".. Phat groove thanx to a huge bassline drive which supports an atmosphere.. hmm quite original ! Good to hear different things especially here as I enjoy many of Iceman's choices. However it could leave one a bit skeptic.. Let's say it's not that brutal, hehe. An elektro passage in the fifth minute does it right followed by break where the bassline is skilfully transposed.. Nice final part, then. Good track !

06. This track also supported by a phat bassline has something old-school... but with very digeste melodies which serve the (superb) rhythmics more than monopolizing them. That's a good thing and full of delays punctuations balance the whole. The second part of the track becomes more floating and peacefull thanks to waves, but the ryhthmics works remain huge.

07.Amethyst opens on a deep basis but also a dark atmosphere (not too much). The ryhthmics are top built up and served by remarquable production (as all the tracks on the comp).. The flow gains in power constantly in a very interesting way ! The energy is big very big even if the track is not an 'usual killer' like one would expect it.. More or less intense passages follow each other with subtle news in the rhythmics.. Great work !

08. A transition composed of a 4:4 downtempo beat and some piano chords repeating constantly.. Atmospheric or more twisted waves and arppegios achieve the picture..

09. TP ends the comp with a flow in the way of Fish's track. Mostly set up with loops, i guess Tszpun had much fun with the effects.. Some italian vocoder-samples (i assume) punctue here and there some rhythmics that once again are always so good. The final part promises to be outstanding until a new sound that bores me a little bit. Not that important : when TP stops it, the track suddenly burst more. Pretty good conclusion !!

That's all folks ! So we have here a comp that will please a lot the deep progressive stuffs amateurs, as much as a wider range thanks to its good ideas, its psychedelics elements here and there and the great application regarding the rhythmics works. As I said before I will pay some attention to the future productions of most of the artists. My nice Fall surprise !

Thanx for the reading !
Cheerz and 'til next time !
