The review:

Another new label (at least to me) and here we are with another new compilation. From the looks of the names this is gonna sound like a Zenon Records compilation, but hey, that's no bad thing. Let's go then.

Track 1: Ok, starting off with a goodie it seems since most Sun Control Species tracks have been great so far. No different here, his trademark groove, this time finishing off with some nice Human Blue like melodies. Stellar stuff.

Track 2: Shadow FX serves up a pleasantly funky track with a lot of emphasis on the bassline and the percussion. Nice work, it has a great groove throughout. Some more Matrix samples, but this time from Reloaded I believe, and since that hasn't been sampled to death, for once this one is forgiven.

Track 3: Tetrameth is up next. Trademark Tetrameth style which is a little darker sounding than the track before. Pretty fat overall, it seems he's upgraded his bass a lot since his debutalbum, which wasn't all that fat sounding. At least not like this. Lots of sampled voices in this one as well, but since most Tetrameth tracks have had this it's not really all that remarkable. Anyway, a fine track. I like the title, hehehe Nice stereo effects too, and it actually gets quite wild with that melody in the last few minutes. Great stuff.

Track 4: Ah, Sensient. Ya gotta love that style. Pretty minimal, but not bad and it can be quite hypnotic. I like the sampling and the buildup is phenomenal as usual. Nice stuff, not one of his best tracks though, but it sits really well here.

Track 5: A sample, a hard dry kick and bassline, some quirky little acidlines and an overall more bouncy feel. Not like the tracks before, but it sounds pretty good. To give an indication: Think a regular darkpsy track with more emphasis on melody. Good variation, that's always nice and this track is not bad at all. Good finish as well.

Track 6: Darkpsy eh? Seems we continue in that vein with Dark Nebula teaming up with Strange Planet. And indeed it sounds like dark psytrance, maybe a tiny bit more minimal though. Some sampling and the sounds fly all over the place near the end but overall this song didn't really grab me as special. Ok but not great.

Track 7: Starts off pretty screeching, with some great emphasis on the kick. It stays that way, even with the melodies. It's a bit strange sounding, but I actually quite like it.

Track 8: Longest one on the cd. It's actually pretty uplifting and melodic. With a length like that I'd half expected it to be a slow building minimal monster, but this is quite different. Not bad at all, but a whole album of this might be tiresome. Anyway, it sits quite well here.

Track 9: The last track finishes off on a slower and deep level. I like the atmosphere throughout but it's not a track that sticks with you. Nonetheless a nice finisher.

Conclusion time:

Ok, this is an oddball of sorts. Rather than stay with one style this compilation dips into progressive (sun control species), minimal (sensient) and darkpsy (darknebula) and comes out quite well. I think it would've been even better had they focused on the darker minimal/funky style like Tetrameth for instance. Anyway, the tracks on offer here are quite good. I'd give this one 8/10 but if I can give the label one advice it's to stick with one style. It works better on compilations like this to build a good flow. But, as it stands, good stuff and for a first release this stands up well.

nice review acidhive. Just want to point out that one purpose of this compilation is to showcase music from a particular area in australia (byron bay and surrounding areas). All the artists are from here or started their music career there. So its hard to find 9 tracks of 9 acts from one very small part of the world in the same style. Hope explains why the style moves around a bit. Cheers.

yes thanks tim, the idea was to showcase artists from this area hence the different styles. And that was the idea to show how all the different styles from the different artists. and thought it might be a refreshing listen to hear the range of psychedelic trance on one disc.

there was a blurb in the inside cover which explains it all ;-)

thanks for listening.

I think it's good thing that this compilation moved between different styles. It sounds rather fresh

One of the compilations of 07 for sure!           Kimi-tachi wa keikoku sareta!
