1> If you listened to his album 'A Cup Of Tea', you already know what kind of production you can expect from this French artist Kick Bong as Pure Love is in the following. The atmosphere is cloudy, ethereal, hypnotic.

2> Kuba delivers some exotic dub vibes with The Place It Starts. I notice the tune takes a moment to really start (1''30) which long compared to the total running time of this track (5'52). As i previously said, the feeling is on the exotic side with Indian flute or ice block synth for the melody with additional African voices. I'm not fully convinced by this production it lacks something that would afford to consider it as more genuine.

3> Rocket light makes you penetrate through the prism of the Morning dimension with a muffled jazzy downtempo production : Enterprise is gonna cover your eardrums with silk. The global feeling is very aerial & light, in a word floating.

4> For beginning same remark as in previous Kuba's track, the starting is much way too long ( upto 2''00 here). Otherwise the major difference with the original emanates from a more acoustic sounding version despite this it keeps very close from it. Personally i don't see too much what or how it's supposed to embellished this song. So, was it necessary to do this remix? The answer is no, even if if there's nothing awful here just a feeling of a filling track.

5> Kuba delivers some Balearic-Dub style within Road To Find Out, embellished with some feminine Oriental (Indian?) & African voices. From 4'39, the melody confers a supplementary swift Asian touch, definitively this track is multi-cultural . When Kuba express with the necessary time needed his own production skills it's much way better & furthermore than his remix production.

6> Jong (another French artist) cooked an highly twisted psychedelik downtempo full lenght version of Sideways, you'll hardly recognize the original or need a lot of concentration to manage it. The result is really surprising & entertaining.

7> I'm not fan of the melody & i find out the flow not to be smooth (especially at beginning, it improves later on) which is the last straw for a chill song!

8> Enterprise is an interesting Chill artist that i enjoy major part of the time not to say all the time but Eniac is not his best tune. He has already been more inspired by the past, just compare with 'Rocket Light' on this V/A ...

9> Floating layers coupled with a light piano, such are the ingredients contained in Air from Zero Cult. Around 3''00, it tends to be more hypnotic with a strong immobility feeling, at this part the tune aims to generate on you an inner travel. Emotionally speaking this track ranks at a high level, be prepared for it!

10> The melody & more globally this tune has a melancholic aspect, like contemplating the snow dropping outside through the window near his radiator or fireplace for the luckiest.

***

I'm disappointed by the tracks quality's selection as Chillcode used to cook us high level chill release standard up to now, let's hope it'll come back for Chiller vol 2. It comes, for me, from the fact that several artists come back on several tracks which contributes to a lack of diversity & creativity...

Climax:6
Favorites:3,5,9,10

Only 6/10 for Chiller vol 1.

Beautifull V/a stand out tracks from all, great work by kuba, zero cult and enterprise, If i had to pick a best it would be Zero-cult - 500 seconds, very emotional stuff here, both this and Air are amazing composition.

Killer one chillcode crew, its a brilliant release

All the best for the future

Morpheus Review

STYLE
Downtempo instrumental electronica from the Chillcode stable. Chiller is mostly a languid, beaty collection of low bpm pieces that draw together sharp synthetic programming and a variety of moody sonic embellishments. Indian and other world voices; a mother and child talking, a female singer, a choir bring touches of the exotic along with flute sounds and other global elements. Philosophising intellectuals their utterances drifting on the air, thunder, bird calls, sibilant effects and digital alchemy further colour the musical mix. Entheogenic present a couple of wistful arrangements - with dreamy piano lines, international vocal samples and rubbery, sinewy electronics. There are warm electric guitar passages, some tropical dub reggae influences and a couple of lush digital arpeggio centred soundscapes from Zero Cult. The album concludes with a less percussive track from Saafi Brothers - guitar harmonics and simmering synth cycles bleeding peacefully away into an imaginary sunset leaving the listener blissfully at rest Under The Stars.

ARTWORK
Chiller Vol. 1 comes in a sharp package fronted by a pale dew dropped flower fading into an effulgent whiteness. Crisp borders and titles add to the classy presentation that continues across to the back panel when the case is opened. Here the traditional track list appears. Inside the imagery is repeated only without text - a luxurious two panel spread of heavy blossom and smooth light. Opening the inner booklet we find an extended track list - this time track lengths are shown and writing/remixing credits. Once more the cover bloom provides the visual appeal here laid out below the information that fills the upper half of the sheet.

OVERALL
German ambient label Chillcode continues its delivering of high quality releases with this latest offering that serves up six different artists both from Chillcode history and some that are new to the label. Names like Kick Bong, Kuba, Enterprise, Entheogenic, Zero Cult and Saafi Brothers will be suitably appealing to chillout fans - with some immersive excursions described in promotional material as "light, warm and soft ambient ... spaced sounds with an ethnic touch".

Really enjoying the tunes on this compilation. The Zero Cult tracks are awesome while the others are really really good too. The punjabi vocals in the kuba rmx are sublime. wonder where its from?

This is realy something, timeless compilation like always from chillcode.
All tracks with absolute beauty, clear production and very good arrangements, especially in Kuba tracks
Waiting somebody to put a full review for his new album. Laurence Harvey is already legend.
Also very happy with Enterprise, the multi-talented guy Alex Korosh.
Amazing music guys!
Cover art: beauty, whiteness, simplicity and underground!

five star compilation
masterpiece chillout
