UV lights - dangerous???

I've been reading and hearing about the dangers of UV radiation for a long time. It's bad for your skin, and your eyes. Psytrancers spend hours under these lights, sometimes every weekend, and some of us every day. Has anyone seen any research about the possibility of getting sick from such exposure? And if so, is there an alternative for UV deco that can still look good at a party?

hey dimitry,

the ultraviolet from black lights is not the same as ultraviolet from the sun's rays. it is too mild to do any damage to your skin. however your eyes are more easily damaged by uv, and the ultraviolet from the blacklights at parties -can- damage your eyes, but only with prolonged exposure, ie, staring into the actual light for a long time. so as long as you don't stand there staring into the uv tubes, you're cool.

They can ruin photos and videos though (if you don't have a lens filter).           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Well, staring at the computer screen for a long time has the same effect.

There's three types of UV radiation, UVa, UVb and UVc, and the sun produce all of them. This division is based on wavelenght. The shorter the wavelenght of an electromagnetic radiation (like UV), the greater it's energy. UVa has the greater wavelenght, UVc the shorter wavelenght, so UVc is much more dangerous than UVa.
UV bulbs produce mainly UVa and UVb (which causes cancer), but it filters the UVb out, so that theorically, in a well sealed, high quality UV light, only UVa gets outside the bulb.
However, prolonged exposure to UVa rays from a UV bulb can damage your skin and eyes.
Be sure you buy a certified lamp.

I've always wondered whether UV-light (the kind of UV-light the blacklight tubes emit, that is) is dangerous for eyes.
I don't mean the radiation but the way it distorts the sight. A human eye is after all used to normal daylight and darkness, but does (prolonged) being in a place that is illuminated by UV-light cause some kind of harmful effects? Do note that I'm not talking about cancer or anything like that, but the way human eye reacts to the different kind of illumination and so forth..
Anyone who knows?

I don't think there's a danger to the eye physiology.
Haven't you notice that during sunrise and sunset "fluor" paintings are bit brighter? That's because sun emits UV radiation, and at that pediod of the day there are less of all other visible lights (with longer wavelenght and less energy). During the day, occours the same as when you turn on a UV light together with a normal light: the UV radiation is there, but everything seems to glow less, because the normal light is also being reflected. At night, when you turn on a UV light, fluor stuff glow strong, because the only light that can be reflected, or better, emitted (but that's another history ), is the UV.
So your eyes are already receiving UV radiation all the day... They're adapted to it. It's evolution...

yeah, my artist friend's been complaining that she sometimes has trouble focusing her eyes at parties. She paints UV backdrops, which means spending a lot of time under those lights. I wonder if this post should be extended to the Deco forum..

Well, let's wait and see.

I am sure there's some research out there on blacklight exposure. Maybe I'll go look.
