So I use this technique often in glitch and down tempo tracks I do which gives a real nice shuffling feel but it doesn't seem to work that well at faster BPMs (like 140+) on 16th note high hats, especially when they're playing over straight open hat/snare patterns.

For glitch, fuck yes. Heavy duty 16th note shuffle. Sometimes the offbeat will also be off the grid, too, if I'm really adventurous.
For prog and techno, absolutely, too. Just a touch on the hihats and some extra snare pops in there...
For 145 bpm, sounds muddy IMO. I stay away from shuffle for faster tunes.

Swings are awesome, and so is removing the quantize grid and plaing it off the beats! Try delaying a snare a bunch of ms to make it stand out
You can swing about any bpm's, but it helps if everything (or most of things) are affected by that swing: your drums can have a swing and everything else should follow the tempo the drums lay down, therefor following the swing too.
Also, you can have slower swings of faster tunes tom make it stand out, faster swings on fast tunes can have a totally different effect (which metal drummers exploit a lot), but can also take away the beat definition and mud everything out. But, whatever sounds good is good!

swing manual or auto..always if it sound better, only thing that have to stay straight quantize is the kick except if you really want to go far.. you could place the second and four kicks a little shorter same for the snares and built the beat around this just as example . also everyhting can benefit from right time alignement to the kick (exaclty like a bassline but it apply for leads, for percussions..) for tighter groove and offcourse turning off quantize or using automatic groove stuff if it enhance the groove.
it can be night and day vs a perfectly quantized beat but the faster the bpm the more it s subbtle but still worth it sometimes..depends the day, the mood, if it work well on the tune.

it make me think when was using all midi set up, i was often starting my tunes at around 120/130 bpm cause you feel more all this and check from time to time at 140 or whatever fast bpm but i m not sure if it really help..still sometimes i slower my tunes to check the groove, if something is off it will jump at you while at 145 it may not .

I'm not sure about what we're having as topic here, but bringing this one up, seem rather relevant for having swing problems in higher BPM, though this seems to be more at about 140
