I used to use my laptop as my primary workstation, and as such it was very easy to plug the laptop into my external monitor so that I would have twice the screen real estate to work with. Since I built my new desktop though, I have had to go back to one screen which is kind of annoying - and most laptops only have video OUT not video IN so it was no longer as simple as just plugging in the VGA adapter.
However, I just discovered a workaround. I went into the windows display preferences and forced it to have 'another display' even though it could not recognize it, and then had windows 'extend' over both displays. Then I had both computers install http://www.tightvnc.com/, set up the desktop as the Server and the Laptop as the Viewer. With barely any configuration at all, boom my laptop sees my desktop screen! Now all I had to do was drag whatever I wanted to see onto the imaginary desktop that I created. It's a tiny bit laggy but when all I use it for is VST windows anyways that's really not a big deal. Very happy to have all my screen real estate back!
So...TLDR I found a method to use a laptop as an external monitor for a desktop.
