Is it possible to share Cubase's CPU work between 2 computers using a regular home network?
Yuli told me it's possible with a connection between sound cards, but unfortunately this is something I do not have.
Can this function with in a LAN?

No this one actually works through digital audio cabling like ADAT, TDIF, AES/EBU, S/ PDIF.

check this out:

I already know that it uses digital audio cabling. I was asking if it's possible to accomplish with a home LAN?

not true. cubase sx is designed to be used as a 'stationless' studio, with the ability to utilize more than one workstation's resources for vst's and what not. read the first 3 pages of the pdf for sx, and you'll see the blurb. how to impliment it is another story. it definitely won't be like beowulf for linux, or like a render farm for 3dsmax, but i'm sure you could link computers with vsts loaded across a network.

no, pc anywhere is for remotely managing a pc. i think he's talking about linking multiple systems together and syncing them to one box

Mike, the answer is NO.
so far the vst system link works only via audio cables and hurts audio quality as well.

i once told about "ardour" for linux,
well it does support this kind of things
via "jack" interface.
it only has about 10 basic plugins and has no software instruments (afaik)

BTW
there's a box named "TC Works Powercore".
maybe u should check it out - native processing (like the pulsar, but better )

No money to buy new stuff - all money available at the moment is going to 2 network cards and a cable.

bilbo how exactly does it hurt audio quality?

plz explain

The synchronization ain't at it's best and the flow of the work isn't as good as with one pc but the audio quality is afaik the same - eventually the recording is digitally done 44.100 so where is the loss?           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

well, in my experience analog devices, after rewiring them through several instrumentation, suffer from quality loss, to an extent. Digital, AFAIK, does not suffer from that syndrome.           "We Do Not Allways See Things As They Are. We See Things As We Are" -Ancient Chinese Proverb

Killer stuff Bilbo but actually my choice goes to the Universal Audio UA D-1 ,cause the compressors are really impressive and get you the vintage hardware crunchy feeling ,the reverb on it is really smooth (not so smooth has the TC´s but to dance music i think that it fits fine)!!

Yuli, the system link "can" pass 24 bit audio , but it does some kind of depth conversion so it turns actually to 20 bits.
this is how quality is cut.
read from steinberg site:
http://www.steinberg.net/en/ps/products/music_production/cubase_sx_pc/feature_description_6/index.php?sid=0

it's not that u easily will notice - this is 20 bit recording, that is 24 bits recording.
but u know:
all in all the better digital recording is, the better its downsampled mix will be.

other aspect: most sample rate/bit depth converters work best with some parameters and worse with others.
well 20 bit is somewhere i wouldn't wanna go.

hope i've been helpfull.

BTW, Yuli!
when do we see(i mean hear) 5.1/7.1 production ?

boom.
