i am thinking abt getting a set of hifi speakers as second set of monitors for better referencing. got this idea when i heard my last project on speakers at a friend and got information abt my mix that i obviously did not catch on my monitors. i think it makes sense to check a mix on a hifi set. now i am wondering what second set to buy (to hang on an ampl. i already have). for 100 euro i have pretty good used bookshelve hifi speakers. but maybe its better to get the cheapest with very low quality, as these good hifi speakers make everything sound good (although they react on levels in a good way so for volume monitoring they are good). anybody here using more then one set of monitors for mixing? thoughts about this?

Get a set of Logitech's or Creative's ~50 euro costing speakers, they're quite common and a majority of people will listen with those kind so they should be quite good for reference.
Also, the older iphone earbuds (not the ones that come with iphone 5) were legendary for their bad sound. Many used those for reference when mixing music |

if you can try before buy. good hifi is usually not cheap, u need good amp too.
i have maybe 4 or 5 diffrent pair of speakers but use only 2 ,it usefull yes, even 100 $ speakers can make something jump at you more than a expensive monitor.
but keep in mind the room can color a lot the sound and you may have the same problems what ever speaker used
u could get a good headphone ath m50 is really great for the price |

true the problem is the room. cheap hifi might help me out with hearing that. no budget for high end hifi and probably no need, maybe i will do something like alajarvela said. using good phones, beyer dt990 pro, but maybe not so suited for low end issues. cheaper and safer to go hifi.

ath m50 will blow any cheap hifi i think but mixing on headphone is not everyone taste . the low end is very good on these cans once u get a bit used to it.
i have a minirig, it s quiet good too but more to check mix translation, not sure it would really help you in your case.. but if u need a portable speaker its nice

I am also having this idea of getting a normal hifi..
all the mixes i made i heard it on studio monitors and they were sounding good.. until i heard it on hifi.. they were sounding very thin in compare to others.
i think it also good to check on computer speakers with a woofer, in the car stereo, lap top and on Big PA system..
The big PA system also helping me a lot.. i had access to listen to it on JBL PA SYSTEM.. on this system most of the dark psy sounded quiet bad.. even the mastered ones..

dunno could be only me, but monitors can be very detailed so it s easy to get lost on stuff that dont matter wihtout fixing what really matter.. while some speakers that are way less detailed and flat can make some mistakes jump at you, that you have to fix it instanely.. so i find both really good to use toghther.
first using the less detailed speakers/hifi to get things right and then fine tune on the best speakers can work nice.. |

yep heard them some weeks ago they are good to start a mix and then to move to something more full range.
in the studio i heard them they also have very expensive pmc and guess what? they are collecting dust.. they use ns 10 90% of the time.. pmc are their for clients.
these are very good dont get me wrong.. but in the end it s all about knowing the gears and the room. |

yes those mixcubes are just for simulating all that consumer soundsources, laptop speakers and whatever..
i would really like to have some NS 10 actualy..
they sound like crap but if the mix sounds in them, the mix will sound everywhere.. -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.- |

did like alajarvela said, 40 euro logitech computer speakers. not so good sound. but they will help. i figured out my problem is the square room and the new monitorplacement. when the monitors where diagonally placed it was ok (mixed a track that way that went well), to win some space in the small room i put the monitors along a wall, 50 cm from the glass windows. was acoustically not a good idea.

i m not really familiar with ns10 but i think these are still in lot of pro studio cause many learnt to mix on it.
after years learning them inside out it s too much hassle to switch to other pair of monitors and it s not needed anyway ..i feel it s more cause of this these are still a lot used
