does anyone know any cool tricks you can do with Gating? instead of use them as bleed blockers, is there any cool tricks you can do with them?

i heard that finding a nice subsine wav for a kick to layer, put a gate on that subbass that triggers the kick

I'm taking the opportunity of this thread to ask a noobish question : How is Gate usually used ? I never trully understood it, I know what it does (cut the sound if its amplitude drops under a specified threshold), but I never understood how to use it in a practical way.

(Sorry for hijacking your thread )

I prefer this little freebie: mgTriggerGate (there is the brand new version http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1185.html) but I am quite sure that they aren't speaking about the same thing.

I think they are looking for some info about the use of a "noise gate": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_gate           http://soundcloud.com/alphadelphi

Gates are traditionally used more in recorded music.

For example if you record a drummer, on the bassdrum mic will always be the signals from the rest of the drumset ---> gate           http://soundcloud.com/seamoon

Its not the subass that triggers the kick, its the kick that triggers the noise gate int his case.

I prefer to set a subbass with a synth or sampler so you can make key change in order to have the sub kick to play in tune with the bass. then you need to apply a gate on the sub By sidechainning the gate in oder to open the gate evey time the kick comes in. Here you need to fiddle with the paramerter playing with attack hold release and threshold and intensity in order to get the right feel.
its used a lot in house or electro but fullon is too fast for this kind of process. progressive track could benefit a process like that

Gates can be used creatively for all sorts of things. A common way used in trance is gate on pads for example. In cubase you can load the midi gate on the tracks you wanna apply the gate. Then you create a midi track you assign to control the midi gate . You then draw a pattern mabye 1/32 quantize or 1/16, you fiddle with the parameter of the midi gate and there you have it a trance gate.

you can use gate to shape sounds tails, snares ,reverbs ...and i guess there is many tricks, like on a drum beat, isolating sounds on a break beat loop...
kick and sine i never get great result, try noise with open hat or snares ,maybe it can sound good.
a bit in the same style of tricks ,try sidechain compression on reverb triggered by the dry sound

try a fairly big reverb on a snare, 100% wet. set a gate on the reverb channel and adjust it to cut the reverbed tail of the snare... 80 style           soundcloud.com/epsylohm

I think of a gate as something that does only allow a certain part of a sound or midi to come through. It can be used for many purposes. I like to use it when there is a certain something I don't want to necessarily come thru as much or at all.
Think of it as a door with someone that tells whatever wants to enter what parts they have to leave outside ...

My favorite:

mgTriggerGate is pretty nice and a little lighter, but imo you can get much more dynamic and grooving rhythms out of this. It's available for Mac too..           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

the only thing I use gates for in trance is either for clearing up with removing low level reverb tails, or abusing it as a ducker           https://soundcloud.com/hazak
