Does anyone use 'visualizations' when listening to music on apps like WinAmp?

They don't seem to get mentioned much on this forum... which is strange because they are perfect for listening to trippy music like psytrance.

I think my favourite would have to be 'Milkdrop'... it has a massive range of images and patterns (use F1 to see all the options).

http://www.nullsoft.com/free/milkdrop/

Anyone else have any recommendations?

Also, which types of music (or specific tracks) do you think work the best?

...

While i’m writing on this subject i would also like to recommend this game:

http://www.alpha72.com/Chromadrome/chromadrome.htm

It’s a clone of the old C64 game ‘Trailblazer’ but very psychedelic! Put your favourite music on your favourite music app, stick on the game in ‘Warp’ mode (with the sound turned off) and it’s a brilliantly trippy and totally hypnotic way to pass a lazy hour or two. Btw, the above link is for the shareware version. Not sure what the limitations are but it’s well worth buying *cough* the full thing!

Peace and stuff.

for winamp i used to dabble with R4 for it's been a while...

i was recently introduced to the demo scene which has NOTHINg to do about demo's is just short animated 3d films compressed and ready to be downlaoded. they quality is not always the same, but some of them are pretty nifty. so if anything i just mute it and combine graphics and music. If you could sport a couple of decent digital projectors for a party on a loan and can't afford or can't find a VJ this stuff could be an alternative substitute. i haven't inquired on this matter much more and i don't know much else besides this though...

Ahh what a nice thread. I don't use winamp, just WMP on the Randomization setting. The kids and I often lie back on my mattress at bedtime facing my PC and listening to something gentle; it's our 'cuddle/quiet time' and they love watching the images on screen and making things up to explain away the shapes. My favourite one was a fairly recent description by my son, who is seven years old;

"Rina it looks like we're diving into a black hole, like time-travellers."

Proper little space cadet that boy, I tell ya!
I think we were listening to Whirling Dub by Suns Of Arqa at the time. And my vote would be trancey dub/psy dub because you get the lovely floaty pad-like visualisations but mixed with lots of interesting spikes and swirls. Best of both worlds innit! Just like the music.

I also like closing my eyes.

hehe, that’s so sweet about your children and the quality time. Wish my mother would have done similar things when I was a child.
Your boy will soon be travelling and exploring black holes, just you wait and see

About the quote: I absolutely agree, and it seems like an forgotten art. Plenty of people I talk with cant imagine what I mean about tripping with your eyes closed.

My most awesome "trip" was the very first time I ate Mexican mushrooms. It was unbelievable good "graphic" wise. ..

To bad that I cant make beautiful trippy visuals with my eyes closed when I'm straight. It just doesn’t get as good in quality and floating. And it's much more blurry and not so crystal clear. But still, I can fly in beautiful places.
I just like it better when the view is crystal clear.

Note: My very first “close your eyes and trip” was when I first smoked hash. It was so simple and easy. Just two colours representing the struggling sound of the track I listened to. It was still amazing, but compared to today, I got to laugh.

i really like the concept of sounds a colors...

does anybody have a idea of which program to work in, as i think coding might be a little difficult to start with..
any program that has a good interface which will make it a little easier?

iv looked at Ultra Fractal - Animation Edition, would this be something good to work with?

ideas are welcome...

Milkdrop is at the very top in terms of visualizers in my opinion, sometimes it goes so well with the music (especially psy) that you can't believe your eyes.           Row row row your boats gently down the stream; merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dream.

Awww, that's really nice, Rina! You sound like a wonderful mam!

I think it's good to get kids inspired by music. Many of the great musicians and composers started creating music when they were sprogs. It's also good to show kids that there is music out there other than chart pop and that crazy bleeding frog!

You really should try WinAmp! It is the only player to use and much better than WMP. The newer versions tend to be a bit overcomplicated and resource hungry so if you just want a damn good player with a massive amount of available plug-ins get version 2.

Btw, i like to close my eyes too but i’ve found from experience that it’s not a good idea when listing to music while driving.

All the best and keep up the great posts!

I agree. I also like the way you can rate the different patterns so that you only see the ones you like and can get rid of the ones you don't like altogether. I just wish they would bring out a new version!

listening to psy and watching visuals of fractals is a good trip ,but if you do it for much hour and close the monitor you could see those fractals in front of your eyes...damage on the eye look..           ~~~~~~~namaskar~~~~~~~~~
