If you have a computer. Do you then use your laptop in the studio to produce with, or do you only use it for live use ?

Don't see the point to produce music on laptop if you have your computer in disposal with bigger screen already hooked up in your setup.

It's another deal when you don't have your studio computer and you want some work to be done, but in this case, this question is rather silly to me

in some cases yes, i do: laptops are quiet and laptops have shitty speakers.

quiet is good when you need to record something in a really quiet environment, like whisper or some clothes noise etc.

shitty speakers help me to understand if the mix is good enough. lots of people use laptops to listen to music or watch tv shows / films, so checking your work may show something new.

I use my laptop for gigging and as a secondary screen for my desktop in the studio. Tried a lot of programs for it..best one by far is Splashtop. No lag. $5. Multiple devices.

it can be a avantage to get one computer for everyhting.. but laptop are often not powerfull beast and when they are they make too much noise.
i use a laptop for all my needs right now.. but next time i buy a computer it will sure by a desktop monster and use the laptop for when not in the studio.. i enjoy a modern laptop you dont really need to upgrade it .. all decent one are powerfull enought for live or jaming on the road but performance/ price ratio is very bad on laptops and you can t replace just a few parts every few years to upgrade it that why for me having both is a better solution

These days you can built a Desktop PC wich is more silent than any Notebook, especially under load !
It even gets loud when playing a movie (html5 or flash)
When I open a project on my MBP it immediately began to get hot and loud.

My PC with OSX is always not hearable.

I'm heavily considering switching my desktop system to a dualboot win7/osx configuration once ableton 9 comes out and its in my grubby little hands...how is your hackintosh experience?            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

would be intrested into this too..macpro are way too expensive.

and agree with ansolas desktop can be made very silent wihtout much hassle, it s about picking the right parts, from the tower to gfx card to the fans and more..there is site dedicated to this, it s years i haven t checked this but i think this one was really good

I've given up on the macbooks ever since they gave up on musicians: their systems are focused on eye candy, are not configurable (both in hardware or software), and are I/O limited -> the only edge it remained was it's long lasting battery, but pc manufacturers have already caught up with this, with pc systems that last 5 or 6 hours. The mac pro desktops (not the iMac) are probably the only thing that's usable, and I cant say a thing bad about them (except their price) - but they have a lot of competition the the tower pc's.

If you want a good pc, silent, and great for production, I always recommend these guys:
http://www.raincomputers.co.uk

Now, why would you want to have a pc with OSx running it? Last time I heard, device manufacturers don't build drivers for that OS, and the OS is highly coupled and optimized with their hardware.
Regardless of an answer, I dislike to have a paid OS, that is BSD based, and I cant manipulate it the way I want. It's like taking an open source software, and making it for Windows (which, by the way, is getting really good with shared libraries). Honestly, I'd be using linux for music production, if only the guys at wine did something to raise Ableton live's compatibility -> the software works great in linux, except rendering audio files, so no audio recording.

Enough ranting. I use a laptop (or even, two laptops) in my studio. The laptop is highly configured for making music, so fast, responsive, extreme low latency and silent (the results of rain recording), it does what I need no problem -> and with a 22'' external screen for extra screen real estate. A desktop pc is much more customizable, but I need something that lets me make music without getting in the way, and a good laptop is enough.

The main advantage is I can take my studio with me in a bag (well, not all the equipment, but my laptop, mouse and soundcard fits anywhere, and that's the core of my studio). The main disadvantage is a laptop is more expensive than a desktop, so you can get a lot more bang for your buck.          Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz
