With all the dramas I read with Compatibility issues ie. needing a TI Texas Instruments IEEE 1394, would it be a mistake just to go a USB Audio interface for a Notebook?

i think the firewire is more trustable...specially on the stage...becouse you leave usb for your other devices (controller, mouse) and use a specific protocol to your audio device...
I have a PreSonus Firebox with a Vaio Pc Notebook and never I had any problem with that.... |

+1 on that.
The most difficult part with firewire products is the preliminary investigation you should go through about drivers, specific or non-specific incompatibility issues with any other hardware or software product that will be interacting with a certain firewire device.
A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life. |

Firewire is your better option, but that doesn't mean USB is unusable. If you plan on using a USB interface with only a pair of stereo outputs, maybe up to even 4 outputs, USB might be OK. Anything more, forget it. USB streams break everything up into packets, which inheritely isn't so good for lots of audio.
Another big reason is that USB driver & device implementations in windows is inheritely more problematic the more devices you add/use. I've experienced no such problem with firewire driver implementation under microsoft OS. But then again, I use significantly less firewire devices than usb.

BS, I ran 6 outputs several times using a terratec phase 26 usb audio interface without any problem. I've bought 2 FW cards (M-audio & edirol) that never worked on the other hand...

I'm glad you have a usb solution running, but I'm certainly not bullshitting anyone or shooting from the hip. There is valid technical reasons & realworld experience for my suggestions, but ultimately you need to make your own decisions.
