USB sound card?

Well I'm thinking about getting a sound cardsoon and just figuring out which to get.  Then i saw a sound card, the m-audio audiosport quattro which seemed great, 24 bit 98khz sampling, direct monitoring, 4 inputs 4 outputs. and only around $250, but how are usb sound cards?  I've been changing my set up extensively, and right now it's looking like a low speced computer(128mb ram p2 400mhz) which I'd like to use for sequencing and about 1mb-2mb of samples(just for drums and some stupid movie quotes...)+mixing a few line ins(i'm trying to save space, my mixer is tooo big...it's annoying).  well anyways I do not need it for synth sounds, I have an alesis andromeda and an edp wasp for synth sounds.  I was also considering using the computer for some simple fx, like delays, but i'm not sure this would be possible on my piece of poo pc!.  Software wise I'd really prefer to use cubase over anything else, logic's interface buggers me, and cakewalk seems too simple?:o...this is just a very hard transition for me to involve a computer into the set up, i've bene using strictly hardware for so long! but i really want that graphic interface... I hope i just don't smash my computer screen when i get pissed off at it...hrmm...:)...i was also thinking about getting a delta 1010 or an event layla, but they're also a significant amount of $ more...any help would be greatly appreciated!

just make sure this card is USB2 complia96nt, and get a really fast HD, otherwise i'm not sure it can stand the bandwidth:
USB1 can give max 12Mbps [accrdingly to some site]
and USB2 can give 470 Mbps (?!?!?)[accordingly to that same site]
now, for 1 mono stream of audio 24 bit 96000 hz u need at least: 24*96000 bps [2.2 Mbps]. this is 2.2 * 8 [ins/outs] = 17.6 Mbps - more than USB1 can hold.
maybe my figures are a little wrong, but check this out.
btw, there's another alternative: hoontech DSP24 card.
they use the same A/D D/A as Event Layla, and cost very much less.

bom bom

how many ins/outs does the hoontech have? i need a few for mixing in other signals, i'd like to g et at least 4(main outs from andromeda, then 1 for the wasp+1 for a monophonic out on the andromeda so i can effect it oddly), more would be even better!...i thinik i might just head to pickin up a sampler, selling the wasp for one, i don't know if i'm ready to deal with pc for audio=o

u can check the www,
and they have a "break-out" box with more ins/outs
have u checked aardvark cards ?
anyway, i think u better go for pci/uwscsi, and not usb1
and about dealing pc + audio:
look most of the audio equip. is digital [FX boxes based on DSP], mixers, synths ["virtual" analogue"]
isn't the most natural way of manipulating the digital data with a computer ???
and it's not so complex, just get all the manuals at hand, and take some time to settle things down in the head, you'll be OK :) it's only a machine.

BTW most of the programs in mastering/mixing interface use intuitive interface of real mixers... what can be so difficult ... ?

i dunno they just bother me, i think i might go the pci route, but just for multi tracking, sampling is too annoying on pc...i really like pushing really buttons and tweaking real knobs better...!...pc is just so affordable! but now that i'm just getting into it again(i was using soft synths about 4 years ago maybe 5...) i'm realizing the limitations that once existed still exist today, and there's so much more that needs to be done...my main gripe is running out of proccessor power, i'm one of those peopel who make will have 1000 paramaters modulating 1 thing, and i don't want my pc to crash because i like to run about 8 of these together...=, i expect hardware to be able to handle this, but it seems pc cannot! even with high proccessor speeds ...the mixers are pretty easy it's just setting up everything, i think a lot of this software does the task, but with OVERKILL, so it becomes annoying to navigate, i want a system with NO FRILLS...no fancy little features, just enough so that i can get down exactly what's in my head...

i don't see anything you can't do with software,
but you're right, u need to pay more attention to the order of all the CPU loads u make....
but u can do this: u can use the PC as a very sophisticated recorder/mixer. this doesn't eat much CPU:
u can continue using your HW, u can use some multitrack sequencer to control it [this doesn't eat much CPU], and after you record it as audio, and when u need to arrange blablabla, u can use the plugin effects and audio editors: u don't have to use softsynths at all....nor the plgin fx.
i agree the softsynth can kill the box..but u can adapt for this too: export their sound to audio ... e.g.

it's nice to have a recording in 1 time live session... but this doesn't work all of the time.
actually most of the time.

yea i'm going to be selling my wasp to my friend to get a k2000rs for sampling/weirdo digital sounds the andromeda can't do and then pick up like an m-audio delta 66 for audio recording:) and use the pc as a recording device ilke u suggest, so much cheaper then ANYTHING else for recording...:)...24 bit 98khz sound card will be sweet to master in that high of quality!=D... pc i don't think is the most natural way with dealing with digital, it's a bit easier, but i'm just so used to hardware that i'd just lose so much knowledge bout hardware i dont' really wanna lose, better if i can learn a new technology and combine that with what i know and make nutty stuff!^_^...thanx for all the help, hey do you know a sound card which i could upgrade for more outs? the more the better...this way i could master each track specifically...:)...and ddo recording all in 1 shoot, maybe some life tweaks...how much cpu power does it eat up if your'e doign multiple trax? like 8+?
