USB/Firewire Soundcard help needed, please.

I have just moved to Korea and currently only have my laptop to make music on. As you could imagine the soundquality out of the laptop speakers is terrible and even with a set of headphones plugged in it doesn't get much better.
Therefore I need an external sound solution.
I was hoping that I could use the expertise amongst the forum and find out if you know of any decent USB/firewire soundcards that don't cost the earth.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I looked at the Soundblaster extigy and have talked to a friend who has it and it appears to be not a very good solution for music making.
Is USB dodgy for soundcards to begin with? Firewire would be better right? I'm a little confused because on my laptop I think there is a firewire port but it doesn't look like the rectangular IEEE (or whatever) ports I've seen, it's more square. Is there such a thing as more than one shaped firewire port?

Narco, check out M-Audio's website, they are releasing a new firewire audio interface( I think its a firewire version of s/c delta 410.. but not positive)
It should be cheaper than others like Motu etc.. |

man, i don't know why you think you have a firewire card ( i think pc laptops don't have it).
as for laptop audio i-face you should also check RME Hammerfall DSP card. it has 2 parts: pcmcia/pci host card , and external audio "daughter" interface.
check it out too.
