I'm a web developer and graphic designer who's interested in building a US psytrance portal website, with forums, calendar, releases, articles, radio, etc.
I know what you're thinking: "Oh no! Another lame portal site that's cluttered and full of ads and half-assed content."
That's not what I'm interested in building. I'm talking about something worthy of representing and uniting the psytrance scene across the US. Instead of isratrance we would have our own place for US psy.
Is this something that you feel would be beneficial to people, or just more noise in the signal?
Any and all input would be appreciated. Especially any ideas regarding what you would like to see included on the website.
I know things like this have failed in the past, but most of them were half-hearted efforts and advertising driven. |

I know we're all flooded with a ton of social networking sites and such but if done with an "easy to navigate" front end, I think it would be worth the effort ..
A big plus would be to have the content tied together, such as event listings and locations, also to be tied in with pics and videos, reviews and recordings from those events in the sense of an archive for people to access all in one spot, instead of spread out all over ... also simple user profiles that load easily and aren't spammed with ads ~
I know there are a ton of design templates and formats, but maybe the designer could request from the potential users, what is important to them so that it meets their needs with room to evolve over time ..
blah blah .. lol
cheers,
d.

Sure, why not? As long as you have the time, energy, and skill-set to do the job right... but it is perhaps more of a commitment than you realize.
Might as well make it North American if you're going to all the trouble... |

I'd definitely support it. Hopefully you have some good ideas for it and enough energy to promote it via web. I'd be interested to hear what ideas you have

This wouldn't be a social networking site because there are many that work very well.
As Dragon said, my goal is to have the content tied together. IE: You post an event to the calendar, and that event has it's own community photo/video gallery as well as discussion thread, as well as who is going, who needs a ride, etc. All tied into the event.
The other main features of the website would be an Articles and a Music blog, except in moblog format, where anyone could post new articles or music release reviews and the posts would be moderated by editors.
People would be able to have profiles, but they would be kept simple and it wouldn't be geared towards social networking. Unless this is something people want?
I'm very open to ideas. If I can get a clear vision of what needs to be done, I don't have much of an issue committing myself to it.
Obviously, my doubts are with differentiating the site from others as the online focal point of the North American scene, and how to adopt a format and features that would accomplish this. |

What platform would you build it on?

I agree! Canadian and Mexican artists are already coming here and our artists there... So if the purpose is to connect all the psy families in this part of the world, then they should be included as well.

Not sure at the moment, still trying to nail down everything the site would include.
The bulk would probably be custom-coded in either PHP or RoR. The forum will probably use SMF (simplemachines.org), or I might develop the site by modifying the SMF codebase. I'm looking at all options at the moment.
Might incorporate wordpress for the moblog features.
Thank you all for the input and suggestions so far. I agree with everyone here that it should be for North America not just the US. |
