and yes i can do 4 cdj's at once, and have 2 of them being my cmx 3000's were i can set multiple loops off of the tracks, then layer from the other 2 cdjs..
4 minute plus mix with 4 tracks, effects and fader cuts
but whats the point of that??? This is psy not hip hop. So many things like that ruin the individual tracks

I def agree, and I think this is one of the big challenges to laptop DJs, particularly those using Ableton. The "standard" way of DJing with ableton, i.e. layering a bunch of different loops across many different tracks, is really much more appropriate for other genres - minimal, indie-electro mash-up, progressive, hip/glitch-hop, etc.
Psytrance (at least the stuff I play) really isn't conducive to lots of layering, because it has a very full and rich harmonic spectrum, clear well-defined tonality, and complex internal progression and structure... But that just means that psy djs who wanna use ableton, and want to do more than lazy-ass two channel mixing, need to do more work, and come up with innovative uses of the tools available. The ability to load any VST or AU synth or fx plugin allows for a ridiculous amount of flexibility, and allows a DJ to approach DJing more from the perspective of a producer/musician. I often have 4-6 audio channels inside my ableton sets, but usually only 2 of them have full tracks - the rest are different song elements that I have created/sampled - pads, sound effects, voice samples, percussion patterns, etc. And then there are the effects sends, which have all sorts of reverbs, delays, flangers, phasers, filters, beat cutters, rhythmic gates, etc.
and, IMO, one of the best things about ableton is that you aren't limited to using simple DJ eqs and faders to blend things - you can use customizable filters and many band eqs, plus more advanced stuff like frequency dependent side-chain compression.
And I always figure out the key of tracks that I play, so that when I do layer tracks, or layer in harmonic samples, or play a synth live over a track, it makes sense harmonically.
And ultimately, none of this means dick if then end result doesn't sound good - and if someone else can rock a crowd harder than me with just 2 cd players or turntables and a mixer, my hat is off to them. I don't really do it because I'm trying to be better than anybody else, I do it because I want to challenge myself, and I want to explore/expand my own creative limits as a DJ/Producer/Musician/Whatever.
...but i still like the idea of a competition, just cuz I want to see what everyone else is doing, and get ideas/inspiration

oh, me too - that's why i spend most of my time producing tracks
But I enjoy DJing as well, and I wanted to be able to incorporate aspects of my production environment into my DJ sets - and honestly, I just sorta got bored of the limits (imo) that the 2 decks + mixer setup has. |

Playing a live set by triggering loops has been the most fun performance I've ever done. Also allowed for the most creativity.
