DanVapid, lol, great ideas man. I like the three rounds and bonus round idea, although I am gonna have to take a vinal "challange" since I can't play vinal.
I am thinking something in the Japanese game show fashion.

fuk it, if you are gonna start imposing rules about what an artist can or can't use, then I say it better be 100% self made music on handmade instruments with out amps or microphones...

+1, lol!!
I def agree that learning how to beatmatch is an essential aspect of learning to DJ, but I also think that once you are really good at it, if you choose to use tools that save you the time of having to do it manually every time - so that you can focus on other stuff, that's cool.
I don't like the idea of limiting the tools that people are allowed to use - obviously no "press play and dance behind your laptop while a premade ableton arrangement runs" ...but i think if anyone did that in front of a crowd of other DJs, they'd be laughed off stage anyway.
I'd be cool with having different categories, at least in the initial round(s)... but in the end, I think it should be about whoever has the best sounding set, regardless of what tools they use to make it - laptops, hardware synths/samplers, effects units, whatever.
regardless, I think there should be multiple cameras set up at different angles aimed at the DJ's setup, running out to big projection screens, so the crowd can really see what each DJ is doing.

DJing will perpetually evolve and advance exponentially in order to keep up with technology. It's a beautiful thing. I used vinyl turntables for years and years. I'm a little glad they're collecting dust. I used to have a road case with BOTH turntables and the mixer in one coffin. It was ridiculous. I went digital and couldn't be happier. I guess I'm not invited to your DJ battle Royal. =(
I never really understood the competetive thing. If a DJ is kickin ass, doesn't EVERYBODY win?

Yeah you would be surprised at what is accepted these days and what people get away with...Think you've never heard a pre-arranged Press-spacebar-and-rock-faces set....you prolly have. Not to say that is bad, it was probably phenominal.
Does anyone have any thoughts about pre-arranged dj sets. Just curious. Like writing out a track list, mix points, timings, phrasing issues? Curious, albight this discussion probably already happened in another thread.
Noooo Billy you have to be there. I'm bringing apples and oranges for intermission. How could you miss out on that?!

Vinyl died
cd's will die, so will mp3s, wav's and each of us.
You can spend your energy like a fundamentalist trying to bring the world back to the "golden era" or you can open your eyes and see that your living in it.
We have more tools and processing power than ever, why not utilize it?

Yes I agree there...but with all this processing power at our fingertips, a question is raised.
Can we ever replace the "brushstroke" made in-hand by an artist in digital form with processing power. The artist being a dj or whatever. I don't think so, but you may disagree with me.
Computers don't even come close to the processing power of the human mind imo.
Use the pentium inside of yourself.
The only technology we are talking about "banning" can be refered to as "crutches".

very well put!
think of all the artist, musicians, architects, physicians, mathematicians, ect. throughout history that had NO processors.
ok laptop djs can be in the battle royal but lose 10 points off the bat, if they can make up their deficit through track selection, music progression, EQing ect. then they could still technically win... but deserves a * since its like the steroids of djing.
