A cdj is a cd player with pitch control. There is no magic behind it, it DOES convert ones and zeros into music.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/cd.htm
It requires the "little pluggy thing" because it operates on AC power.
I kinda don't understand where you are comming from.
Good points? And to think, I thought the entire time that the pluggy thingie in the back was a camelbak hose. Could never figure out where the damn water resovoir is on them though. |

From my personal experience I can tell you that this experiment alredy took place in Japan about one year ago, at the amazing outdoor gathering. The party was called "Battle Royal" and it included only DJs in line up, and label owners, who are also Djs. No live acts were present. The line up was following: DJ Giuseppe (Parvati), DJ Teo (Discovalley), Dj Becar (Insomnia), DJ Ken (Phreex Networx), DJ Spliffnik (Brainbusters), DJ Mondo (Fullmoon), and truly yours DJ Niki (Mighty Quinn).
The experiment was a totally "best of the best" successful Open Air gatherings and Psy-Dj Battles up to date!!
I cant tell you who the winner was because.........everybody was a winner!!! Perfect music, perfect crowd and nature, perfect dance and trip!
Would love to experience another Battle Royal...maybe II???
BooM!

You know... all that I ask is that you play decent music and try not to frackin trainwreck... Is that too much to ask for. Quit dickwaving... I honestly don't really care how many tracks you can play at the same time or how long you mix, as long as you don't trainwreck more than once in a set... In the end, if I really like the music, I'm not watching how you play it. I'm dancing with my eyes closed going on the journey that you are supposed to do. And yes tracks are supposed to be a journey, but honestly how far can you really go in 8 minutes. I do like the concept of a collaboration of short stories into a cohesive novel that really takes you someplace... In my ideal, that is what a dj set is all about for me. And the technical stuff is basically the grammar inside the novel.
But please, can we end this petty banter... I know some of you are having fun with this, but don't you have something better to do? It's summer for crying out loud, go do something.

to sum it up in simple terms......less is more. psy has all of the tricks and tweaks built into it. overzealous mixer antics detract from the inherent structure and flow of the music and are blatantly obvious to those on the receiving end, in a negative way. if the dj feels bored and a need to kill time, it can be spent in a number of better ways. laptop mixing is cool, as long as the extra free time is used to improve the upcoming mix to the fullest extent. if technology is used only to make basic mixing techniques easier, then thumbs down. in the end, alex/bastard is right - dj's are only playing other people's music and therefore should keep a more humble perspective on their trade. also, mixing full on is more simple due to the music's structure, but most "dark" dj's circumvent the unpredictability of the music by either planning sets in advance and/or fading between beatless breakdowns. that's the tradeoff that exists. in any case, i wish there was a sarcastic smily available because this thread was started in jest and i'm glad most people treated it that way, interspersed with some genuine debate. as a final word, djs should resist the rockstar mentality and consider their actual role within this community. nobody has ever gained fame and fortune as a pure dj playing psytrance. a dj just plays an equal role in the collective experience that sets this scene apart. chasing after dj superstardom in psytrance amounts to chasing after a myth. you will surely become disappointed and jaded and set yourself back in life. if you can integrate your dj abilities with some other attribute such as label ownership or music production, then that dream can become more tangible. otherwise, just have fun with it, recognize your role and don't think you're something more than you are. my first and last two cents... |

Actually, the main point of what started this can be summed up very simply:
If you're gonna do something, do it right (or at least start by doing the fundamentals right). There's a million things you can do to improve or ruin mixing, but if you don't have the fundamentals down, it really doesn't matter (at least not to me). http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

There's also the issue of lineups at parties and festivals not being booked on "meritocratically" as it were....(probably not a word)....but booked as 'bro hookups.
That's why you get DJs that dont have the requisite basic skills.
'nother reason to have mad respect for Rich (besides masterminding Gemini in the first place)....he doesn't do that...lineup is done based on talent and flow.

um, Wrong. No doubt fame in psy community but unless I am missing something I would not call what he is likely to make a fortune.
How much is a fortune these days anyway? |

good question.
and Goa Gil isn't poor, based on what he charges and how many gigs he plays. Good for him though, he deserves it.

Actually, it's just a nerfed computer that's been built to resemble a turntable so that the vinyl purists would shut up about cheating.
It's quite funny that we now have people trying to claim the CDJ is somehow more legit than a computer, considering that when they came out, they were considered a tool of n00b DJ's not willing to do the work of a "real" DJ.

LOL @ the irony. I used to catch so much shit playing cdj's when all my turntable mates were doing their thing. |

IMO, purists (of any sort) tend to be too focused on one narrow skillset, which they try to attribute some made up "legitimacy" to, rather than focusing on the art-form as a whole. |
