Hello dear friends!
A phew months ago my Hush QR pc was pluged in and working fine in my studio, i left it for a brief moment to come downstairs. While i am downstairs i start to smell something burning, as i go back to the pc i find it black on the screen, it doesn't respond and some smoke is coming out of the case.
I managed to switch it off as it didn't respond but still had some lights on.
I left it for a phew months.
Recently i switched it back on to see what would happen, and :
I think the fan started to spin and it wanted to work but i kept strugling to do so, and the main thing is that there was alot os smoke coming not directly from the power supply but from the cd/dvd drive.
The cable that comes from the power supply to this cd/dvd drive is slightly melted an the cd drive end.
I am broke and cannot afford to go to a shop and pay them loads of money just for them to tell me that maybe my computer is all fryied.
So i am trying to diagnose what might be damaged inside the computer.
So please, i call for your help.
I just needed somebody with a good light of understanding on these type of subjects to advise on some simple steps to follow to know if it is rubish or still can work.
I am not a computer wizard, but have enough knowledge to follow some cues.
Can you help me guys ?
If needed i can provide more detailed description on anything.
Regards
Luis

What if you take out the cd drive totally? Does it spin normally?
Then again maybe it might be a good idea to wait until someone with real understanding of the subject comes along to help you before you burn even more. |

To help with these kind of problems without pictures or any other info its impossible.
Without any info i would replace the PSU, and the melted cables.
Then take out all components, HDD, gfx card and just see if it lights up. then insert gfx card and so on piece by piece. If smoke has been coming out of the dvd-drive id discard it and get a new one.
Edit: Just saw that you could provide more info Luis, if you could upload detailed pictures from the inside that would be nice Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

ok, i understand. but i have no one but myself.
Not possible to get pictures either my friends.
I can figure this out with some help!
Computers are not more complex than the human brain, are they ?
Physically there is not much about it, apart from a cd/dvd drive that seems to be damage by having burned sockets and respective Power Supply cable on the Drive ends.
My steps for the mean time are to remove as much components as possible in order to not allow the Power Supply to cause further damage, assuming this one is sending wrong voltage to the components.
1 - I just disconnected the cd/dvd drive as this seems to be damage by the slightly burned look of it's back sockets and i don't really need it to get the machine going for the mean time.
2 - Graphics card is allready out and was tested and works fine.
3 - I have two hard disks remaining in the computer.Do i need any of these disks just to check if the Computer powers on ok ? (one of them contains the OS)
Any more components to remove ? (maybe ram)
I have been advised to replace the power supply.
Any advice on how to make sure the POwer Supply is damage without causing further damage?
Much Appreciated guys "As The Mind so the Man"

Instead of playing with the rest of the components, what brand does the PSU have, id suggest you get a quality 80+ psu in case you don´t have one like corsair, antec, bequiet.
I mean if the PSU gives the wrong voltage it could cause all kinds of problems for the rest of the system, so id say replace it before it deep fries the more valuable components.

If something was melted your power was fucked somewhere along the line. Power surge + cheap PSU = smoke. I concur with vegetal - I wouldn't bother trying to figure out if it's damaged...it could work again fine for a few more days and then do the same thing and mess up more components. As said before, take out the CD/DVD drive, the melted cables and replace the PSU with a decent quality one, 500 watts or so should be fine. They're not that expensive. About 80-100$ here in Canada for a decent one.
Troubleshooting is a step by step process, so try this first; if everything works after the above, you're good to go, if not you'll have to keep figuring out which components are bad or not.
Also, if you pull out 5 things and the PC works, how do you know what part you pulled out helped? One at a time...and anytime smoke is involved, always PSU first.
Don't overcomplicate stuff by pulling out hard drives and stuff when it's not necessary.
Good luck |

I get your point!
I had allready got the graphics card out, coz i lended it to a friend when the computer was off anyway.
What i have just done now is unplug the PS from everything it feeds in order to remove it and replace for another appropriate one.
My current power supply is a TC-500 PD1
Unit size: ATX
500w
Should i replace it for the same one ?
Or get one from the brands you mentioned above ?
I have to take the risk of buying a PS with the possubility of that not being the only problem , righ guys ?

I would go by it this way:
- Replace the PSU (and cables)
- take out all but Graphics card and 1 ramstick.
- switch on and see if anything happens.
- if nothing happens, I would replace Motherboard and CPU (I tried this once)
- if screen comes on and BIOS option is avaliable, enter BIOS and reset to default settings.
- then switch off (and turn off PSU too)
- Plug in HDD
- Switch on and boot if possible.

Yeah, looking up your old PSU online, it's a no-name brand...probably about as cheap as it gets. I'm guessing it came with the case/PC...common place where a pc manufacturer will cut corners. |

yeah, i absolutely agree! But the incredible thing is that they are not that cheap, same price as the brands mentioned above.

I was looking around the shops in town, for a PSU from either corsair, antec etc.. and they don't have it.
The point is that i came to this guys shop i know, and we shorted the black to the green and the power supply seems to work fine. We got rid of one of the SATA connectors that melted.
* For sake of clarity; the melted SATA plug used to feed the cd/dvd drive.
So, it seems to me that the SATA connection heat up ''somehow'' and caused a shortcircuit.(?)
By ''Somehow'' i mean :
- Spikes/alterations in current from the mains.(?)
- The PSU causing that by itself. (?)
- Or a faulty cd/dvd drive. (?)
What's responsible here ??
Conclusion
I have cd/dvd drive that seems to be fryied.
A power supply in which a faulty SATA connector was removed and seems to work ok.
What would you do?
- Still get another power supply ?
- Try out the one (iSTARUSA TC-500 PD1) and if it works stick with it ?
Cheers pple!

Buy new power supply and dvd drive and anything els that looks like it was affected...
Why even gamble with damaged parts?
