Hey all, this is kind of a noob question, but i hope all of u would bear with it
When composing dark psy leads, like to really fast squelchy/ electrifying lead patterns, do people usually use 1 long note and use an arpegiator? or pencil in the notes to make it sound in rythm? coz i can never make my leads sound rythmic and thats what im really aiming for.
Also is it better to bounce the leads to audio when im satisfied with how it sounds and tweak futher to get better results, or keep them as midi notes so i can make changes to them when i feel like. Is there a benefit in using one method over the other?
all help would be appreciated |

Urgent answer! It's up to you. Nobody can really tell you how to make your music. It takes practice.

hmm, yea i know that, but im just really having a hard time getting the my leads to flow with my basslines if you know what i mean. they never seem to go into rythm....
so if u could suggest a method on creating those rythmic leads it would be lots of help.
and i agree with u completely, its just frustrating spending hours trying to get something out of your head but never geting actual results. |

Experiment and find your own way.
Both method can work, arpeggiated & trancegated or note by note, portamento or pitch bend... its up tu you, but try to play with delays.
Start by painting a simple one note pattern and move the notes until you like it.
Rhythm in 4/4 loops tends to have its strong hits in the following order: 1beat, 3rd, 4th, 2nd
So this are not rules but since you are looking for guides i can tell you what i found that works...
You can start a rythm from the first beat with some notes then give it flow writing up to the 3rd beat then 4rd, balance so it feels like it begins again on 1 kick, so basically you can divide a loop rhythm in two parts... 1-2 and 3-4 beats... if you vary your rythm different in each section you get almost instantly a dancey feeling.
Also try not to place each note exactly on the beat or offbeat all the time, move those notes some 16th right left, also use 32th notes to make triggery noises.
Vary notes length and velocity and maybe use an envelope to modulate those notes but make the modulation only audible when longer notes, got it?
If you use a pitch envelope you can get those squelchy cuu cu cu cu cuaaa
Use lots of distortions, lfos, routing and strange chorus flangers, render and chop audio to bits and rearrange, add some fx to some of the sounds add some other fx to another bunch, have fun and get twisted.
Rhythmic shit, specially when you know nothing about music (as it happened to me) can be a pain in the ass, but best advice i can give you is: feel it... so with enough time you learn if what will please you is to move this or that one 8th or 16th, or maybe delete everything and start again.
Sometimes the most simple patterns are the best.
Again, use only one note and get a nice flowing line, then add a couple of other notes and tweak just for flavor... use semitones for natural weirdness.
Analyze your favorite track's leads, get the track into sequencer and analyze how it is done.
Also frustration is natural, take your time, you will get there, it just takes a while.

Urgent answer #2! Download a bunch of presets for Camel Space and use it as a gate plugin! It will do everything for you.
However if you want something unique use a pencil or play the lead with your midi keyboard.

i often make a melody with my keyboard first. then edit it with pencil. then use gate plugin. then i bounce audio and edit it again.
seems you have to use anything to make a good lead.
