that is not right ..take a look here
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunstkopf
actually you hear it always when dummy head mic was used because it sounds like nothing else ..since the effect is so intense ,is not comparable with anything else..
..sorry link is in german..but you see the listing what groups have used dummy head in the history.
Pink Floyd 1983 - The Final Cut LP ..all the noises..
The human head localises left and right good and in front of you ,all like above and especialy behind you is very weak.
Pink Floyd used all what was possible.Dummy head exists since the 49/50,just wasnt used in music too often or always never, apart of few artists.

It might be possible that they used this mic for certain things too, since they often used newst technologie for their music and they even worked with quadraphonic setups.
The DVD i ment was a record from a live show, wich was onced presented here in the "Markthalle" in Hamburg with a quadrafonic setup.
you can read here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd#Wegweisender_Technikeinsatz
its the german text but i can translate the sentence i mean.
translated from wiki:
In there Live-Shows they used the quadrafonie in perfection, as they made use of the „Azimut-Koordinators“ to send premade samples through the hall and even behind the crowd.
Hope i translated well but i think you get the point.
Now i would like to know what this „Azimut-Koordinators“ are about

If you want to make a sound "rotate" around someone, then you want a VERY gentle lowpass which is automated 90 degrees out of phase with the pan.
So when the sound is "behind" the person, it is centered and lowpassed. When it is "in front" it is centered but not lowpassed.
You see? It's because of the way the ears are shaped... high frequency sounds are louder when in front than in back. |

Easy. Use a surround vst plugin where you can automate how the sound travels.
I use an effect unit called surround sound, it is part of an old vst fx pack - ultrafunk sonitus. There you can actually draw the path you want your sounds to follow.
Check the top right corner of the photo:
