so, in a whole lot of forest trance, i hear sounds that seem to come from the back of the dance floor, or from over head, and they'll seem to move around the area.
or instead of normal panning from left to right, they'll come from back left to front right or some such.
how is this done? stereo imaging? really good filter use?
mind you, i've heard these at parties that aren't set up for surround sound, so i'm incredibly curious
i'll track down some examples after work, i just had to post this before i forgot
thanks!!

traditionally as I'm sure you know, volume level places the sound in the 'back' or the 'front' and panning places the sound left or right

My guess(havent tried myself yet):
From back left to front right: from low volume with left panning to high volume with right panning.
maybe one could make this even better with widening and/or filter usage.

Easy. Use a surround vst plugin where you can automate how the sound travels.
I use an effect unit called surround sound, it is part of an old vst fx pack - ultrafunk sonitus. There you can actually draw the path you want your sounds to follow.

left and right and round is no problem, you can do it with normal pan or for advanced shit use surround opitions.
For up and down.. for an excellent up and donw effect you can use only a dummy head - (a special microphone)I'm not sure if Im using the right word but maybe you get what I mean.
Record the source like you want it,the effect is intense - impossible to get it with any kind of panoramas.
It is very seldom in any kind of music production and it is totaly off the hook and awesome you can produce with it really magic.
Unfortunately it's very expensive.https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

it is interesting for sure! I saw diskonekt link looks intersting too..but yeah it is only for windows. But I doubt it is that realistic as dummy head... check for youtube there are some inrcredible psycho examples of what this can do to psyche..
You must know reaaly lots of how it works to automate with all this functions a realistic loop or a voice from below .or exactly above you ..very psychedelic effect..Rever time etc is needed to be correctly automated me thnks..
But with all this automation it could be really interesting,Im gonna try the try version..A dummyhead cost around 5000 euro or sth.. so this plug in is for sure much cheaper And must be fresh anyways and for sure!

Well assuming the speakers are physically large enough or the different drivers are spaced far enough apart on the vertical axis a sound could seem to move up and down provided a sweep through the frequencies from one extreme to the other. It would simply be a filtered sound. I dare say a dip or 2 helps bring out some strangely impossible moving sounds once in a while too, so i cannot rule out the embellishments my own brain adds to the experience.

hmmm.. I dont think you get what I mean guys.. I will post later an example how unique and different this can be to to hear a pan moving under or exactly above you..this is very strange for human orientation ,especialy from behind and nothing simple Pink Floyd used this technique not many in the whole music history.
btw.. the link from diskonekt is without a vertical axis..it is standard surround tool with doppler.. Looks interesting at first sight though.

you can get pretty close with eq, reverb and volume, imagine helicopter landing in movies, it even works in stereo.
the human brain is not very good in localising sounds from above. So you can fake it. Pink Floyed used multichannel. This legendary DVD is surround sound.
