Wavelogix, I recently listened to these you mentioned, the dynaudio bm5a, mackie hr824 and the m-audio bx8a...

as SMS said, the dynaudio model that compares to the mackie hr824 is the bm6a, not the bm5a. Still... i prefer the sound of the dynaudios. Its Crystal clear - very tight! If you wanna go overboard, get the bm6a air, you can emulate other monitors (i heard) etc... but IMHO the best value for money with still a LOT of quality is the bm5a. You will be getting a HUGE upgrade for sure

the only diference between the bm5a and the bm6 is that the amp is 100watts compared to 50,

Hi Man,
Monitors are a personal choice meaning that you have to try them to make the right choice.
Also monitors depends on the budget and space you have, I worked with mackies and Genlecs 8" and they sound great but my space limitations force me to go for smaller ones.
If you have a chance listent to the PMC DBS-1A

You won't regret this are clean, amazing stereo image.

If I have to chose betwen the mackies and Dynaudios I will go for Dynaudio

When I went out for new monitors, I tested the BM6As and the HR824s in small and big rooms. In the smaller room and with the Mackies' EQ flat, the BM6As sounded better. In a larger room the Mackies sounded better. The difference in the deep lows was evident straight away, hence I went with the HR 824s and I've got some very good breakbeat mixes out of them.
Anyway, they are both great monitors. Once you get used to their sound and how that sound translates over a P.A., hi-fi systems, small car speakers where people listen to the radio... etc, you'll be fine.           Me>You

IMHO, the BM6a if you have no budget issues. 9 extra hertz for your low end if compared to the bm5a. Brings on some extra control for sure

Is the room acoustically treated?

My thinking is that if it's not, your better off with the DynAudio & spend the difference in acoustic treatment, than just buying the Mackie's alone without any treatment.....

Plus, a sub-woofer is also kind of important, imo....           Keep The Faith,

Endeless thread...

Well WAVELOGIX, if money is not a problem, consult and acustic enginner, make a proper room with proper material.

If the room is big, buy BM6A or HR-824. If not, BM5A or HR-624. Choose the ones that will look better! lol
