MySpace only has power and use because it has become the de facto substitute for a real web page with all the fixings. It doesn't take a lot of effort to setup a profile, share music, post gigs, and utilize other functions common to most underground artists.

The problem is that so many profiles are poorly updated, uninformative, illegible, and/or overloaded with animated widgets, all of which detract from the artist-listener experience in a major way. Not only that, but for my purposes MySpace is next to useless since the sound quality is so poor. I make it clear on my site that I do not take links to a MySpace profile in lieu of a proper demo.

I recognize MySpace's function in this scene but I still think it's rubbish. See, it wouldn't be so used if it weren't for the fact that almost every psytrance producer uses MySpace as their primary web presence. In other words, the half-assedness runs deep in this scene And that's fine, but artists don't own their platform, and anyone with nothing more than a MySpace profile is unlikely to be winning the search engine wars with pirate outlets. Case in point, go look up "solid snake unleashed" on Google.

good points.
i hope my website is up soon... its not simple to make alone and cost not cheap to have good one - include GOOD graphic design

if using templates might as well using myspace default page
for demo's i think soundcloud wins this days

you right with the google search but here is little homework for you: type - 'sattel battle barefoot funk' and after see the result type in : 'sattel battle' and see how it magicly improve the results.
the sad fact is that anyway 90% of those who search the album actualy looking for the torrent or blogspot along with the album name.. another exercise : type in google (with the automatic complementary) 'metallica master of puppets' and see that 'torrent' 'blogspot' 'megaupload' 'rapidshare' is there just as 'lyrics' or 'tab' (thats for guitar notes).

so does people ever looked to buy it or they look for the free download anyway.. and i promise you metallica has good web presence , i sure cant do more then them ah? everything is easier when you have the financials but i think for begginer artists there is no reason not to use a myspace (and design it well)
anyhow also biggest bands with their own super website have a good myspace page.. so its essential just as well. but again its really hard to even keep up with all the social networks as single person this days.. if i want to update 50 forums and 15 networks it will take a week and who wants to do that.. myspace is just fine and soon my own webpage and offcourse facebook too seems usefull just tiny bit more then just for idiotic games.. more then enough for me.. oh yeah and my youtube user i guess counts as well.. allready cant remember it all           www.sattelbattle.com

You can have throuhgout myspace the music quality you want it only depends on what you want there are plenty of possibilites when forgeting the standard player or default myspace side etc.You can design all like you want.
The best thing about myspace imo is that you have thousands of great underground musicians whereoften some of them you will probably never ever hear whereelse.
This is the only place to make my own mind about the actual psytrance image - for my ears - only as an example of what this side offers.
And this is great you dont need nobody else only you to listen to a much brighter range and pick up the ingredients that are undiscovered for instance.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Sure, but a lot of people abuse MySpace. I can see it being used as a music discovery tool but for me the time investment necessary to find something good amidst all the dross is not usually worth it.

Here's an article I chanced upon today that focuses on moving on from MySpace and other general social networking platforms...
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/10/labels-emphasize-artist-specific-social-networks-websites/

I think the unspoken caveat here is that you need to be big enough to draw a crowd. Having a MySpace profile is not a bad idea for anyone just starting out. I only raise an eyebrow when major artists in this scene don't have anything else.

Now I understand you better, and like Elad stated sadly the one's who google 'Solid Snake - Unleashed' actually get what they are "looking for". Not everytime though

MySpace is crap. No wonder it experiences a free fall exposure wise in the recent months. The place is infested with spammers and attention whores.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

Totally! But hey, it is not same if you see that someone play at Boom or Ozora, Glade fest or Universo or Aurora, Time Warp, etc etc, like you see some unknown name of "upcoming" home made party marked with TBC or some totally insignificant name and only place where you can find info about that "event" is that profile that you looking for. Not to mention not a single picture or video from previous "performances".
I think that such things should be differentiate. Who is artist and who is phony. Espesially today when everybody are musician. To separate those who actually create something and work, from fake wanna be's!

You don't need no if you already have myspace. Just be honest with all of yours announcement and everything is perfect. You have place for everything that artist need to show about his projectts and work on that profile. All you need to publish the real situation of the project, not unrealized dreams like lot of "artists" do...
