My DAW is a desktop PC running XP. I also have a laptop and I was trying to figure out how to use the laptop's monitor as a second monitor for my main daw through local network. I've found this software:

http://www.maxivista.com/

It's fast and easy to setup : install maxivista server on your main PC and maxivista client on the second PC, run both et voilà It runs smoothly over wifi so I guess it must be perfect through ethernet.

Got a link on how to do it the other way? I have a laptop with a small screen and would love to have a second monitor           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Maxivista rocks, I've been using it for years. Screen updates can get a little slow on the second monitor if the main PC is running under heavy load but it's very useful indeed. Also allows you to remote control the other PC(s).           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

@ascension : It doesn't matter if it's a laptop or desktop, just install the app on both computers.
