What's your point DETOX?
Many important and groundbreaking labels closed down; Labels like Blue Room, Matsuri, Flying Rhino, Krembo, RTTS, Atomic – the list is almost endless. CreamCrop was certainly also a label that needs mentioning - it played a giant role in the minimal-wave, and a release like Process’ “One Drop Or Two?” is in my opinion one of the most memorable releases from that period.
Oh, and people – take it easy. No need to get personal.

Nomolos like Pavel said the truth hurts, sorry to hurt your feelings.
Profane the labels list that you mentioned closed after releasing many many cds and for various reasons other than low sales that is the reason that Creamcorp closed down if i remember correctly.
Flying Rhino and Atomic Records (and i also think Blue Room but i am not as sure as i am for the other two mentioned) shut down their doors after they lost thousands of english pounds after their distributors fucked them up,these are words from the mouths of James Monro and of Dino Psaras who were responsible for those labels.Nothing to do with low sales here just a major blow from distributors like the one that Twisted got lately from EFA.
Matsuri closed after Suzuki decided goa trance is dead,do you remember the Let It Rip compilation
Lets not put every label in the same category.
P.S I got nothing against Creamcorp for those wondering.

Lets divide this issue into several things:
True, there are many "underground artists" that produce music that does not fit to be released, for various reasons: poor sound quality, lack of musical ability or technique, boring/lacking productions or simply non-comprehensible concepts and non-existant target crowds.
This is mostly happening because of the easyness of which basic electronic music can be 'produced' today. It is quite easy for someone without any basic knowledge in sound production or musical writing to output a simple track that sounds ok on a home stereo. (hell, I've seen/heard people producing tracks using headphones(!)).
This type of music usualy remains outside publishing labels because its commercial value is almost non-existant and lacks the artistic level (of which production is a big part) to be included in such releases.
True, Aki, that many labels are looking for wider commercial potential - and there is nothing wrong in that. Labels, in the bottom line, are commercial companies that must justify themselves economically.
On the other hand, the thin line lies between releasing 'easy-listening' material and more 'challenging' stuff - I believe that a music company must publish not only 'hit' releases that get consumed easily, but also find more challenging material that can put it ahead of its 'competitors' .
Please remember, folks, that progressive trance was considered 'underground' trance at the beginning, when the mainstream was either "nizhonot" trance or pure 'psytrance' ("goa trance").
The question now is what do we deem "good underground" and what is "shitty underground". and that, my friend, is a pure question of taste. Calling all 'underground' music shitty is silly, just like saying that all mainstream music suxx because its obviously commercial. There are some popular songs from artists such as Pink/Madonna (produced under william orbit), Britney Spears (the one and only Miguel Migs) or even our own Astrix / Infected mushroom that cross the lines into almost 'MTV' music, yet their music is simply ingenious (and I refer mostly to their freestyle releases...).
cheers,
T

I'll skip the smaller labels. Twisted do not release full-on or progressive albums (excluding perhaps Tristan's second album which has a bit of both). They are not working under any trend. Their only goal is to release music they think is good, not what the world thinks is good.
Check out their discography and compare it to that of any other label. Most of the albums there will have value in 10 years from now (Shpongle, Prometheus, Hi Fi Companions, The Unusual Suspects, etc). Doesn't underground suck Detox? Is it not another name for bad music?

with 50 000 releases at its best with simon or astral on the whole planet, goa trance is underground music from a to z.
an artist saying that he's doing underground art is just trying to justify something misssing in his creation.
something really underground never claim to be it, it just is it !!
we all have different taste and motivations in listening music and creating it, but let admit something, electronic music is the first style of music that alllow non musician to produce music !! dj, sound engineer, audio technician, computering genius etcc.. are able to produce tec music but put a gibson in their hand and the magic has gone.
underground does not means bad or good, it just means not released on main label.
In goa trance especially it is very easy to create tracks that are twisted and dark.
most of us should know that harmony are far more difficult to create than disharmony.(like love is more difficult to give than violence)
whatever I already read on this forum from parasense I do not agree with him: dark and twisted stuffs are easy to do.
connect a pc to a good synth and plug in and the first patterns that come out are twisted.
when we create electronic music, disharmony and twisted sounds come "naturally" and quickly.....but no one will believe that a simon's track comes easily !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I might be stepping out on a limb here, but isn't the definition of underground music = music that doesn't surface?? meaning, the opposite of music for the masses?? Basically, besides GMS, Infected, Astral, X-dream and a few other selected few artists, i really feel that the rest of psytrance is underground music.. Does that mean that our whole scene is based on crappy music?? HELL FUCKEN NO.. (sorry about the F**k)... I honestly don't beleive that the music i listen to is garbage.. its just not adapted for the masses.. But then again, most 4x4 beat music with none-vocal's isn't adapted for the mass (well, here in Quebec anyways..maybe in other contries, things are different and psytrance dominates the charts and radio's).
anyways, there will always be a crowd for all kinds of music.. As long as its creative, i say it can be heard and seen as something good, weither it meets "selling" standards or not. Not all make music to sell or to impress.
keep it real and we will follow.

I guess most artists would like to be appreciated by as many people as possible. And even psychedelic music can achieve that.
Pink Floyd - 3rd most sold album ever 34.000.000 ( that's 34million)

I got a few names for ya just to know what some gerat "unreleased" music is. Some of these have released something, but most is unreleased, maybe lacks production quality, but still kicks all big-name-repetitive-same ol' crap-copy/paste "great production" with artistic value crap:
-Tsabeat/Sattel Battle (You've heard Dotman, but he has so much to offer...)
-Vihtahousu
-Ex Uus
-Kirna
-Never Trust a DJ
-Neuron Compost (and Hired Goonz, Pimperknuckle...) (Izilop Pop is good, but Reece has some kick ass tunes...)
-The Vicious Spiral (shoulda been released, our fault it wasn't....)
-Tamlin
-Alrune
-Salakavala (I don't know if they'll ever release a full official album, but they have loads of Antiscarp stuff that rocks my world)
Gi'iwa was the first brave label to give release to some of these, why only them? Look at all the great trance acts who're doing shit day in day out - GMS, Space Tribe, Talamasca to name a few.....Great production but boring music....

I'd like to note that a lot of suomi underground trance is not really trance.
They broke so many rules so you can't define it as trance anymore. It's just.. well.. suomi style
And we all know (I hope) that you can't compare 2 different genres.
Saying that the artists the guy before me mentioned are better than lets say talamasca or gms is wrong.
It's like saying that a racing car is better than a pickup truck.
Compare within genres, don't compare genres.
