I'll probaby wander a bit off topic here since I feel that the factors involved in making a good or bad track are far more complicated than just "how you are feeling" at the moment. Feelings are important, but even much more basic things, such as the time of day you work can have a big influence. For me it really depends. I tend to make my best stuff when I get up early and start right away in the morning while my brain is clear and refreshed and I haven't been distracted be whatever daily life has to throw at me. That said, I do a lot of work in the evenings as well due to my job.

As for emotions, they CAN be a great inspiration in creating. One of my better "banging" tracks was written right after I'd had a heated discussion with a label owner who was insisting that no one is interested in the kind of music I make and its just sounds "old" and has no power. Needless to say I didn't agree and fired up cubase and whipped out a track that even now, 3 years later, is still usually one of the highlights in just about every live set I do.

In another opposite example, recently a couple of friends have passed away and the tracks I have created in their memory have been among my best work I think. However, you could argue whether it is the emotions (sadness, anger, etc) involved that make the track better or is it more a case that, in these situations, you try simply trying to do something that lives up to what you are hoping to achieve and thus push yourself harder.

I tend to think the later is more important as the several of my personal favorites among the tracks I have made were created with no particular emotional ties at the moment. Don't get me wrong, emotions can be a fantastic boost, but I think the resulting greatness (or there lack of) comes not from the emotions themselves, but from the resulting drive to create something that is the best that you can at the moment. Emotions definately can help push us to this, but I don't think they are nessecary by anymeans. The drive to make something the best you can make it is, in my opinion, the most important factor.

I also don't agree that you "need" to be happy to make happy music, or dark to make dark music. For me I strongly believe that every track has its own "life" and you should just work with the track to bring out whatever it was meant to be. In the past I've often sat down and been like "man, I'm pissed off, time to make some hard slamming shit!" only to have the results be bright and uplifting. Or I'll try to make a hands in the air morning piece only to end up with some dark techy evil thing. Possibly that is just me, but my general approach now a days is to let the track be what it will be. Once I started doing this, I found I have almost always been much more happy with the end results.

Anyways, how you choose to push yourself to new levels in the technical process of making a track varies from person to person depending on personality, drive, etc. For example some of my friends start tracks constantly, but throw them away half finished fairly regularly when the track isn't doing it for them. In my case (and this is probably a huge clue into my personality and how I approach making music) I am the opposite in that I never don't finish a track. Once I start a track I will work on it for as long as I must until I have created something I am happy with. Another friend belts out full tracks constantly, but he chooses to fairly regularily go back to them and tweak bits here and there. The end result is probably the same in all these approaches in that we all throw away probably 5 tracks worth of material to come up with a complete track, but we all approach it in very different ways.

In the end, probably the only real key to making music is to find what works for you while still always trying new things and then just WORK damn hard at it and try to do your best in every track you do.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

it may be nice to concentrate on good things (making music) when you have tough times. but on the other hand, if you have tough times and problems etc., do you really have the patience to concentrate?

thats why i think music is the way out!

the thing i say is:when being extremely sad(way more often than being extremely happy!)u can create some really interesting music as terms of MUSIC or a godamn great atmosphere in a track-something u understand its UNIQUE,it comes from your inner self...thus its rather sure that your track as production or structure ll be shit but these stuff can be handled later when at normal basis..

i dont know if im clear enough..!

for being stoned or drunk dontknow..ppl argue many times on this issue!

i noticed that when u go through some sad conditions, they result to a better composing in whatever u do...although i have argued with people telling me that its better to sit and compose when with nothing else in your head....at this point i d want to know what ur opinion is!

Its true with every thing here in this world . Its
more connected to character i think . If u a happy
persone and u are walking in a big canyon you
will see only the happy ones there and the sad
peoples will disappear from your eyes and if you
a sad one inverse .

But for the arting part (And only) i think you
sholud adjustment your self to the 'sad button'
The results that you will get then will be much
more real , Deep , sentimental and emotional

strangely, the times my work flows better is those days (or hours) when i shouldn't be producing, but for some reason i can't resist it

like having to wake at 8h and still producing at 4h in the morning           roll a joint or STFU :)

sy000321 it's exactly the same for me! I always end up producing my best stuff when I have a MOUNTAIN load of other urgent work to do, but this stress somehow triggers a fow of musical inspiration that I just have to put down in the sequencer... I end up spending sleepless nights just to get that track finished and be able to move on to the work I have to do           Row row row your boats gently down the stream; merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dream.
