UNDER BYEN was formed in 1995 and has developed creatively and musically ever since. The band has recently gone through some changes regarding band members. Set to release their new album, SAMME STOF SOM STOF (SAME FABRIC AS FABRIC) the current UNDER BYEN members are: Henriette Sennenvaldt (vocal), Sara Saxild (bass), Thorbjørn Krogshede (piano), Nils Gröndahl (violin/saw), Morten Svenstrup (cello), Morten Larsen (drums), Stine Sørensen (drums), and Anders Stochholm (band doctor).
In 1998, UNDER BYEN was signed as the first band to the new Danish label "have a cigar" and released their debut album KYST (Coast). The reception of the album was extraordinary, and the band was nominated for a Danish music award as the best new Danish band.
In April 2002, UNDER BYEN released the album DET ER MIG DER HOLDER TRÆERNE SAMMEN. (Its me keeping the trees together). Once again the second album surprised pleasantly with beautiful arrangements and songs. The sound this time included horns on quite a few of the nine songs on the album, culminating in the 10 minute composition Om vinteren (In Winter).
The following summer UNDER BYEN performed at the Danish music business festival SPOT where the reputable American Rolling Stone journalist, David Fricke, spoke of the band as his favorite band of the year. The excitement continued when he introduced the band in 2003 with these words:
"Welcome to the best band in Denmark, probably the best band in the world."
David Fricke's comments drew international attention spreading the interest in the band to countries outside of Denmark.
In January 2003, UNDER BYEN represented Denmark at the big music festival Eurosonic, in Groningen, Netherlands. The show was attended by the European music press as well as people from the international music business. Under Byen's concert was by many considered the best show among the 120 bands performing. Furthermore, the entire concert was broadcasted live on BBC, by the legendary John Peel.
The following months the album DET ER MIG DER HOLDER TRÆERNE SAMMEN was released in France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway , Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Japan.
On top of producing the albums KYST and DET ER MIG DER HOLDER TRÆERNE SAMMEN and touring in Europe, UNDER BYEN has worked on film scores, theater, remix of Ramstein etc.
UNDER BYEN has now finished their third full length album, with the rather cryptic title SAMME STOF SOM STOF ( SAME FABRIC AS FABRIC). It is released by Morningside Records / Playground music on March the 6th 2006. The first single will be the title song AF SAMME STOF SOM STOF (OF FABRIC FABRIC AS STUFF) which shows UNDER BYEN's experimental, yet catchy side, featuring some corny tuba, tacky kalimba and pumping bass. Different, haunting and unmistakably UNDER BYEN.
Samme Stof Som Stof will be released in North America on September 28th by the Toronto based label Paper Bag who was the label behind Broken Social Scene and Stars.
In Germany the label releasing the album will be Play It Again Sam , also known as PIAS. The release date will be early October.
