I really like 132-137 because I think there is alot more space for details and "deeper" bass

Hi fellow IsraTrancers!
I just registered to post a reply in this thread.
Indeed, there was a paper that linked the typical tempo of Goa trance with the typical frequency of alpha waves in brain (obviously, no single tempo would always work for all people). The article seems to have vanished from its original location, but I found a copy here:

Quote:
| The issue of tempo is an interesting one considering the possible relationship between musical tempo and human brain physiology. The frequency of alpha waves in the brain, critical in inducing trance states in humans, lies approximately between 8 and 12 cycles per second, and varies from one person to the next. . Many traditional trance-inducing musics of the world contain rhythmic elements which mirror these rates. Typically performances start at the lower level and increase over a period of hours towards the higher level. The gradual increase in frequency allows for the variation in different human alpha wave frequencies. In Goa trance there is a constant stream of 16th notes which when played at the suggested average of 144 bpm yields a flow of musical events at an average of 9.6 cps. This situation parallels that of traditional trance musics |

I think that's what the OP was talking about. |

indeed thats more like it, i think ive read it on a student paper , psytrance and spiritualism or smthng like that
beside that the 16th 4/4 kick/bass, when its a straight bassline, the same note, creates a kind of hypnosis to the mind, it becomes a carpet, imo people who create fast stuff 150+ aim especially to that feeling on the overall experience

you can be on trance at 200 bpm or in deep trance even at 6 bpm .
i heard it although with 144 bpm and a starter of trance because your brain cannot work that 16th etc out that fast as it is in full shape, colour etc and start to loose control/trippin far.
But i believe that is a theory and not a formula.ur mind wants to journey or not.

I also enjoy variety.
I’ve got this ‘Solar Fields – movement’ LP today and its real slow and trancy stuff.
Btw, It also contains an almost exact replication of the Domestic bass-line referred to in the domestic base-line thread halfway through the LP. Almost like they share presets.
anyway,, 144 does have a nice bounce to it.

The consistency of every single tune being like this lead me to believe that this is some secret sub-genre of psytrance that I am not yet cool enough to be let in on

Psykovsky? When I checked out his last one that's what I remember. Couldn't really get into it. |

Do you have a link to such a set? I've heard some Psykovsky, but none that sounded like that with the tempo changes... What I heard had some definite darkness to it, but the style was leaning more towards fullon than the Psykovsky I've heard. |

^^^ Check out a track called Exorcisto by Osom
Back to the topic, I think the bpm is important and for me around 152 (give or take) is the ultimate, however I heard very trans inducing tracks at 140 and at 180 also
I think while the bpm is important it is the rhythms of all the other elements in the track that can make or break a trance state even when bpm is too high/too low/perfect. The above mentioned track is a good example of this I think.

144 BPM is the easiest to calculate delay timings for triplets and so forth but who gives a fuck as we have calculators right???
134 - 138 bpm is my preferred.
I used to think faster = better but to give credit to a mind interested in the sounds i like to give them the opportunity to actually hear them, and as a bonus, its easier for the composer to play them!
But then again, when you start playing with swing and offsetting timings of sharp percussive sounds you will find the energy level changes much more than a 4 - 8 bpm tempo change can induce.

a track can sound slower or faster depending on the percursion. a track at 147bpm with really fast and sharp percursion sounds much better than a 150bpm one with basicaly kick and bass and FL default percursion. so if it sounds slow, don't go the easy way (raising the bpm), add more (and good) percursion.
my likes is 145-148. more you loose bass and people will get tired of the music sooner altough it may sound better at first.
