Ordered a Solo card today.
Also, I updated the drivers and now I can run more plugins on my single UAD-1? I think the load balancing has been adjusted.
Hope it all works seamlessly together. |

Do you guys know if there is a f***** way to run UAD stuff on laptops, except the boxes from UA ?? (veeeeeeery expansive).
I haven't seen any solution coming with UAD2.
Maybe a PCI box, or a desktop mac linked to the laptop (i have one) ??

Should run on evry Laptop with PCIE slot..like Macbook Pro and some other Laptops..otherwise there is no chance and wouldn`t make sense..cause you do not get the data rates with Pci or even Firewire 800..
so it would be useless..
PCI/E is around 2.5x faster than Firewire 800..so even if it would be possible you were only be able to open one plugin or s.t.l.t.

It isn't 40x the processing power. More like 10x (for the UAD-2 Quad). Universal Audio did it a again: To little power too late.

Acknowledged. I'm still quite impressed though.
I don't think it's too late or too little.
If you need more than the maximum power available now, then I think there is something wrong with the way you are mixing.
(That was in general, not directed at you Undertow, I don't think there will ever be anything wrong with your mixing!)
I know it doesn't apply so much in digital - but who really has 20 Fairchild compressors laying around to use on a mix anyway.
The maximum cards before was 4, no matter what. I've been using 1 for a couple of months and been doing okay, carefully selecting when to use it.
With a new SOLO, I'll have ~3.5 cards. Near the maximum that anyone had previously with the ability to add lots more if required.
There's always bouncing too.. |

The scaling of 2.5 actually mostly only applys to the newer UAD plugins!! All Neve, Helios etc.
Older stuff scales only up to 1.5times or even neglectable..
Thats a bit disappointing.. especially since I often use Dreamverb and Cambridge EQ (which only scales up in Stereo on the DUO)
I also use the Neve EQs often though.. there is a HUGE improvement (sometimes more than 3x times, in this case more than advertised... )

a question for UAD users here - tomos, subconsc. etc
how do you find the neve plugins for trance mixing ,, i mean there are some plugs that can be used all around like their compressors which are all fantastic or the plate verb but UAD has become famous due to the Neve eq's and while my next investment will be one of these cards i would like to know how is the Neve bundle and Pultec eq, ive heard that they are harsh and do better for mastering than mixing
i would like your opinions about their usage in the mix , this little masterpiece is itching my head ,hehe ,, thanx

gutter, I don't have a UAD card so take my comments with a large grain of salt but this is the first time I ever hear anyone calling the Pultec EQs harsh.
Plugins that work well for mastering usually work very well for mixing too. The only issue is that they often use more processing power.
Tomos, for anyone that wants those UAD plugins, the UAD-2 seems like a step up. My only concern is the price of the hardware compared to the amount of processing it actually delivers.
In these days of massive native computing power and the amazing power that FPGA solutions offer (Xilinx, Altera, etc), I question Universal Audio's choice of going for the Analogue Devices chips instead of another solution...

I think the price of the UAD2 is somewhat expensive considering the lack of vouchers.
I purchased a UAD1 Expert for £500 about 2 months ago, with $750 worth of vouchers (+ an extra $150 for a promotional offer at the time) to spend on plugins and the card comes with around 10 of the best already.
So, the hardware was pretty much free considering that I got. That is a LOT of good software for the money.
Plus, I was surprised at the number of useful free plugins that came with it they didn't mention. Delays, phasers, modulations etc that all sound really excellent.
I don't know what's in the UAD2 'Mix Essentials' pack yet, so I may well get a few extras too.

I'm not using the Neve plugins yet. I'm waiting for some other demos to expire so I can focus on them. I'll probably try them out this week on a new track and let you know. |
