Those plugins stand for a total diferent quality compared to cheap ones such as waves. They really make diference while emulating the best hardware devices of all times, such as Neve, etc...
Those dsp cards should make it possible to run several plugins together and save your computer s cpu, once the card is responsible for the processing. Usually some of the best plugins available on the market would stress the cpu so badly that you would never be able to use it.
For instance, at the protools tdm pack, there s a Lexicon reverb plugin that eats a whole slot of the tdm slot card alone.
At professional production levels I believe that there are 2 brands standing miles away from the others: urs and uad .
I m on the process of saving money to buy them, and I ll never need the ones I ve been using.
The only brand I respect and use a lot, which has great quality for the price are the Voxengo s ones.
Anyway, I d like to know from people who has the uads dsp cards and plugins:
1 - Can you tell us how many cards do you have installed on your computer (some people say it would be worthy at least 2 or 3) ??
2 - Can you give us examples of how bad does the plugins eat the dsp cards processing power? How many plugins can you work together per card?? |

i got 2 UAD cards. (UAD-1e (pci express))
They run many plugins. so far im up on about 10x Cambridge EQ's and about 10x 1176SE. and the usage says 33% on the UAD-DSP meter.
Some plugs will eat more than other tho. example the dreamverb uses huge amount of DSP. So its a matter of wich ones you use.
i love these cards, waves go home

if you need help Collin, I can take ropes, hammers, black masks, whatever...he he...
Talking seriously I m crazy about buying URS and UAD plugins...maybe I ll buy Pro tools M-powered, to be able to finalize my mixes with better plugins, once I run a M audio 410 audio card.
I use and love Nuendo to write down to produce, so i d need to export the tracks and import it at pro tools right? Is there a way to rewire it? If I m not wrong, only ableton Live and Reason can be rewired into protools.
I m in a phylofocical/financial dilema here...
BTW, Alex, have you ever been forced to reduce the plugins amount due to dsp processing overload or not?
Your information is very useful..
Peace. |

What heappens when you buy 2 dsp cards like Alex did?
Let s say I wanna have a complete list of the plugins and choose the uad-1 ultra pak(us1100) first...
Then I find out I need a second dsp card. I would like to buy a cheaper pak, such as the more basic option. Will the second card process the plugins from the first pak as well? How this works for you Alex?
If you bought 2 identical Paks, you should have received the same plugins twice...does each card process only the plugins that came with it because of any kind of system lock or can 2 cards process any needed plugin( I m confident that they do, but anyway its good to be 100% sure..)? Do you know if is there any version of the UAd that comes with no plugin, acting just as a sum to the dsp power processing and because of that being cheaper?
I confess I read all the uad web site but didn t find out those answers...

when you buy plugins they work for both cards. both cards act as one. three acts as once. I have 2 UAD-1e ekspress pak, and the plugins i buy works for all cards.
SO you can buy a cheap an and expensive with all plugs, im sure theyll work on both cards.
All my studio equip. is insured, so come and steal all you want

Not yet, but i havent finished a project since i got them a couple of weeks ago. i also bought virus ti and other goodies, so my mind is many places
But it gives a lot of extra cpu now i can use dsp for comp, eq, verb, delay, chorus and more. The 1176SE sounds really good, can't wait untill i get the money to buy the better version of it
Great investment, thats all i can say!
