Typical Production Technique

Ive just started producing again and am finding out the best and quickest ways of creating tracks for my personal taste, and to maximise my computing power.

Id be intrested to see how other people are going about producing too.

Now this seems pretty vauge so if i describe my set up then maybe it will help:

1. Source and process any sounds that i want to use, typically drums and ambient nosies as well as any samples.

2. Make a basic drum track, then go about composing the bass, melodys and leads until i have a few different ideas in the track. Then start working on the basic arrangement.

3. Start adding automation and then bounce each track down.

4. Open up a new session, import the mix down and then add all the details to the track before finally mixing down.

Sometimes i will maybe use one more session to compose some other sounds before bouncing them down and adding them to the project.

This always me to conintually assess what im doing, and gives me a number of different roles at different times rather than attempting to do the writing, arranging and mixing all at the same time. It saves CPU power, and im not ending up with a messy .cpr overloaded with different effects that dont work together.

It would be cool to see how other people are working.

i usually only start a track when i have already some ideas saved (like 2 melodys and some patches). i do this so i have an idea of what i wan't while arranging. then i create an empty project and:

1. Add the kick, bassline and percursion and mix them together (having just a loop playing).
2. I start arranging adding the synths while i'm arranging. I don't add any effects to the synths except equalizing.
3. When I have the track ready I bounce the drum and bassline tracks and mix the synths (adding compressors, reverbs, delays, ...)
4. When I have everything mixed, i mix again the drums and do all the final adjustments (bouncing what i'm not working).
5. I export the mixdown and work it on soundforge.

i´ve seen some interesting way´s of work(e-motion!)
for me is like:
1º sequence(k k k k) the kick in wav , with some break´s. then alson some hithat´s in wav.
2º i have alway´s bus chaneel´s with reeverb , delay and flanger or chorus...so i alway´s add it to the most of the channel´s , rythm´s and sytnh´s
3ºthen put my brain into work and try to imagene somethin.put some more percusion(beatslicer or battery)and atmosphere fx or pad´s.
all the fx´s are in the mixer and i try to put 1 ekualizer in eatch channel´.no mixdown till final. the open hat´s are in wav has most of the samples N rever´s.sometimes to save some cpu i bounce some small sound´s from plugin´s
then final arregment´s in wavelab..

And You Blue guy´s..........??

well i don't wanna sound like a cliche.

but i do run most weird and experimental production processes.

Process one.
1) turn off the lights in the studio
2) get a flash light
3) launch sequencer and put it in record mode
4) grab my cat, place it on the midi keyboard, and make him chase the flashlight spot on it. (believe or not, this cat sometimes pulls out kickass riffs )
5) afterwards some cleaning and rearangement, and i simply build everything up around recorded idea.

process 2
1) eat lots of mexican or chinese food till it makes me sick
2) get surface mic, attach it to my stomack
3) launch soundforge and record all the incoming audio data
4) boost the signal level of recording, some noise reduction and excessive signal processing with chained modulation effects.
5) the end result is some weird hypnotic soundscapes (sort of noise art)

process 3
i just do it the same way like everybody else.
record some ideas and build on them.

i found, doin' it in some weird strange unortodox way is more fun thing to do, besides there's always room for additional experimenting.
cheers

Hey Lord Deo, your second process is awesome. I need to get my hands on a SM57 and some chinese food then.. Nah but seriously, it is amazing what kind of funny soundscapes you can create with a mic. We have used the mic live a few times, and with the right effects on the signal you can make some neat scapes that "enhances/fills" in a cool way...

By the way, haven't called PETA yet and asked if they want to have a further study in "cats doing music"...?            Aural transmissions from the deep forests of Sweden

1. First of all I like to add some basic fx to SEND chanels reverb, delay, some basic comp. just to work for first aid .....
2. ad a colors to tracks master on red, drums green...
3.Then put a kick and bass and work on it
4. drums, perc.
5. mix down all of this
6. Synth, Fx, Pads etc.
7.mix down again
8. some processing
9.checking for 100 times is everything in place
10. finaly in to wave lab / sound forge           Never let computers to win a game! :)

Depends.
When I work on my own I usually start with some rythmic patterns and bass and melodic ideas I have in my head. Then I just build everything from there. both audio recordings and vst.

I recently did the first Hypnodrift track with PKS (trance.net, Chilltribe records). I had some basic ideas and melodies and rythmic patterns. PK came over an tore everything down :-D We started at the beginning with some intro stuff, then we built everything from there using some of my original ideas. Then I worked a couple of days on my own experimenting with the mix and different sounds, then PK came back and we worked on the rest of it together. Turned out completely different than I originally had in mind.

I definatly recommend producers to work with DJ`s! Nice experience if you go along musically...

P.S. I am drunk. Chinese beer kicks ass!!
