In the ranks of rising american producers is also Type 41 aka George Phillips, a fresh talent from Georgia, US. His debut single Serenity was released on Echelon in early 2009 and now he's back with a rock solid uplifting trance EP Mystik/Lifespark, with remixes from POL (AR) and Innerstate (UK). According to his own words, "Believing is the first step", and with works like these being the next step, the audience will surely be expecting what is still to come from Type 41.
1. Mystik (Original Mix)
The lead track 'Mystik' opens the EP with rich melodies and sounds. A fat bassline keeps the track going with a high drive while several harmonies play layered until the tune slowly descends into the break. A sonorous piano prepares for the build-up, playing a tranquil but dramatic theme, and a cinematic horn sweeps through the soundscape sending shivers down one's spine. The track kicks off in the explosion, squeezing every bit of energy out of the themes in an epic second part.
2. Lifespark (Original Mix)
Beginning with an electric intro, the soul of Lifespark is the cyclic broken chord, driven by the modulating bassline. The track is high voltage from the start, piling up energy with multiple themes and melodies. The mid-break is as epic as can be expected after the first part, a gracious chant hovering above soaring pads and strings. A frenetic lead theme begins a wild ascension and lifts the mood up even several notches still and the second part is full of freely flowing melodic power. This is trance!
3. Mystik (POL Remix)
Argentinian producer POL's remix is refreshing and a great contrast for the original. The background piano and the flashy bright stabs carry the tune forward with a passionate pulse while the main lead borrowed from the original mix gives it the airy uplifting feel we love in trance. Instead of the classic mid-break, POL goes for two shorter bridge passages to kick the main parts off.
4. Mystik (Innerstate Sweeping State Remix)
A bit more pumping and progressive in its feel yet just as elevating, the Innerstate remix gives yet another perspective to Mystik. The bassline has a roamy groove and it's accompanied by lively bubbly melody textures. The breakdown introduces the lead theme from the original in a different light and the build-up has a more subtle character. The second part is glazed with rich melodies, and the slightly different bass turns make the harmonies flow smooth as silk.
