I am new to the scene (as I'm sure all of you have noticed by now ) and this whole "night" vs "morning" vs "twilight" thing really confuses me (since I'm more used to sunrise = time to go home/get food), so I'd like people from a couple different locations to say what kind of music is played at what part of the night (and give examples, don't just describe).

It confuses me too. I think it just depends on the crowd and theme of the event. I sent a promoter a mix here in Texas with tracks from artists such as Toxic, Psyhamaa, Strezz. I felt it was more on the nighttime side but he said that would make a good twilight set. At the last event I went a couple of weeks ago, my friend was playing a lot of older stuff from Manic Dragon (I think several Duck off tracks) in his morning set to close out the party. In central Texas, there now seems to be this tendency to categorize all full on as morning music. I don't necessarily agree with that. I could certainly go for some of the harder hitting Laughing Buddha tracks at 2 AM. Well, don't know if this helps, but I empathize with your confusion. And I'm not even new to the scene

Well for example, I heard this track played in a morning set at a recent festival and it definitely gives me a night vibe despite it's melodic-ness:

Also, the J00F psytrance euphoria comp (which I'm sure is a joke to you guys) has the progressive CD listed as the "morning" cd, but at the festivals around here progressive is ONLY played from afternoon to sunset, which is kind of silly imo because a lot of progressive tracks give me a very morning vibe, for example:

And of course there are parties where they play darkpsy the whole time (especially indoor parties).

If it were up to me, I would have the nighttime music start off continuous, driving and kind of "neutral" feeling (Ajja is the best example I can think of) and have it gradually become creepier, darker, harder, until in the hour or two right before sunrise it's just insanely crazy (like Psykovsky, Polyphonia et al).

Then, at the moment of sunrise (you'd need to be at a beach or something where the horizon is visible so that sunrise happens quickly rather than gradually), it would flip from insane dark to ridiculously euphoric (e.g. Afgin, Protoculture, newer Cosmosis), then over the next few hours calm down into a more driving melodic style (like Logic Bomb or Polaris)

The old ideal of a goa party is the builduing up and down, thorugh the evening/night/morning.. To make a transition between these times of the day/night.

Normally evening is starting it, its going slower, maybe prog or chill also. Night time is the hardest part fg the night.. More power, speed, intensity or atmosphere...

Morning is when the sun comes up, bringing softer and more melodic stuff...

But!!

This is just some rules, it doesnt apply to all goa parties/festivals.. You can go to a darkpsy, fullon or prog festival. Then ofcourse the same idea applies, but maybe not the same define definition.. But check out some artists and listen... Tell me what time you want it played ? hehe

Yeah that's the other thing, one thing that sticks with me is:

There is fast and hard melodic stuff (astrix, X&I, I'm sure I can think of one that is not an israeli artist here!)

There is slower dark-sounding stuff (techtrance)

And then you have stuff like Mr. Rogers and mood deluxe which is kind of in this weird halfway state between everything.

So where does all of that stuff go? It seems like the answer is "nowhere" because I rarely hear any of those types of music at parties (except Mr. Rogers but he's always stuck on the chill stage, even though he does not play chill music at all)

Forget the formula... make your own flow.

Personally I like:

Tech/Minimal/Electro -> Late Morning/Early Afternoon

Proggy/Deep/Tech/Tribal Prog -> Later Afternoon/Early Evening

Night Trance/Night Full-On/Harder Aggressive non dark -> Early Evening till 12-2AM

Night Trance/Twisted Psy/Dark Psy/Etc. -> 2am-4am

Bouncey (Happy) Night Psy/Twilight Psy/Pure Psy -> 3-5or6am.

note: (I associate the Twilight pre-sunrise psytrance as night psytrance with bouncier non dark tones, very groovy sounding but still spooky and psychedelic, lots of timbres, and lots of organic sounding stuff like tribal drums and samples, voice clips welcome!)

Harder Full-On with some Melody -> 5or6am-7or8am

Full-On Melodic, Happy, Energy -> 7or8am-11am or noon.

Then back into the rotation...

I would also like to see other formulas explored. One shame I see is that outside of the psytrance scene, morning is seen as "go home" time (as previously mentioned). As a result, many times what I consider to be the most exciting, and my favorite music, the Melodic Full-On gets put at a timeslot where some of the party's energy is already lost. I would like to see this music played at more peak times at parties. I mean the people who know what's up realize that the headliner usually plays at 6am (usually around here), but if it's a first timer, they won't really get it. Often times they prepare to party hard from 12am-4am, and then crash out for the rest.

I might like to see a party where they start out at tech/prog/electro stuff, and move up through some Melodic Full On, to some harder Full-On (so have Full-On from maybe 9pm till 2or3am), working up to night trance going 3-7 am (encompassing all the previously discussed sub genres), and then bring it back to tech progressive in the morning. Since for many people, the morning brings drowsiness, it would be nice and relaxing to bottom off in the morning with some nice chill progressive, or tech. I've even thought that having full blown Chill-Out music on the main stage starting at 7am would be nice. Either way, I would not want to see the other types of music losing stage time... you could just schedule it differently. I went to a new year's psy party a couple years ago where they had Melodic Full on from 12am-2am (the headlining slot), and then gradually worked down to harder, night, and techie stuff throughout the night.           http://www.soundcloud.com/djKAHN

Oh so when people say "twilight" they mean the morning twilight rather than the evening twilight?

Should say "dawn trance" instead, less ambiguous.

The morning doesn't bring drowsiness around here for most people... I went to a festival recently that was from friday afternoon until sunday afternoon, and a lot of people did not even arrive on the dancefloor until 3 AM sunday morning.
