Thanks again. The 2 advice I keep from the last session : 1 - keep the right balance between artistic and technical side and 2 - using crappy speakers can help to not focus too much on the details of the sound while arranging. |

i have just saw it now. it was realy helpfull movie!
i have one question for you that i would be realy gratefull if you can answer me becaue i couldn't watch the movie at the time you made it.
it's about kick:
lot's of people talk about tunning the kick to the note of the bassline. do you realy do it? if the answer is yes. how do you it? and which analyzers do you use to be sure you right?
it's just something that i thoght about lately that maybe this is bullshit and it's all about the ears and i don't have to make sure i'm at the same note at the kick and the bassline. |

Yes, most of the time
Using my ears

My ears
You don't need an analyser, your ears will tell you if it's right.
It doesn't have to be the same note as the bassline, but just something that is consonant with it (that doesn't obviously clash)

Both are right:
Yes,
1. it is all about the ears.
2. You don't have to make sure that the kick is at the same note as the bassline.
You're probably already doing this to a certain extent anyway but by instinct...
By choosing a kick and then deciding which key for the bass sounds nice against it involves making a judgement about what sounds nice.
The point is just that you can take this a stage further by tuning the kick in the sampler...
Cheers,
Bill

about the artistic vs technical my opinion is always the same.. learn the technical stuff but dont forget to finish some tracks on the way.. i allready released 3 albums and not sure what i do but slowly it comes together to solid state that as long it sounds good to me its great! just like at day no.1 (with lots more filters and precise eq from having MUCH better speker and acoustics as well some experience on loud systems/clubs etc)

Bill I know you answered this kind of in Tweak the Tunage 1. You talked about left brain and right brain processes for making sounds vs. creating melodies and tunes.
I work by myself right now. How did you manage it when you worked by yourself? Sometimes I'll really be in the mood to make something cool, then I get hung up on the sounds, and lose that state of mind.
Did you ever just make the song, then worry about the sounds later?
and I don't mean to hijack your thread sorry it's off topic.
