This is the first video in a set I'm creating about music theory guys. I am taking a very practical approach to these tutorials. I will not bombard you with terminology that only applies to people who play in orchestra or anything. However, knowing some of the key points of music theory can improve any type of music substantially. I know for sure it made a world of difference in mine.

REMEMBER YOU DONT ALWAYS HAVE TO STAY IN KEY. DON'T LET MUSIC THEORY CRIPPLE YOU. THERE ARE THINGS CALLED ACCIDENTALS (notes played that are not inn the scale) THAT MAKE MUSIC MUCH MORE INTERESTING WHICH I WILL COVER IN ANOTHER VIDEO

Anybody who doesn't know any music theory should definitely start with this video or something very similar.

I think if the psy community would learn and implement more theory there would be much more great music to go around. I especially hope to hear some music theory in dark psy, instead of what is (mostly) heard currently which is technical work.

Just a note folks: I'm going to post all the theory videos in this thread since it's going to be a series. So feel free to ask questions and discuss music theory in the thread. I don't want to clog up the forums with a handful of theory lessons each week.

part 2 on scales guys.

just remember what i said. don't be afraid to go out of key if it sounds good

accidentals (out of key notes that are played) add so much to a song. staying in key works fine but you can really spice it up and catch the listeners off guard with a few accidentals.

Seppa: You should see the intro to simple chord construction in video 4 in a day or two

dija - once again excellent tutorials, really great to see someone getting the knowledge of the theory out there for those who wish to learn it.

Something i have to say, when at uni i got all caught up in learning theory as i believed that without it you couldnt make music, i was wrong, trust your ears and you wont ge far wrong HOWEVER i believe that music theory of some level (exactly what is being showed here) is very important and helps with creativity and overall musicality of your music.
A friend of mines once told me that "yeah learn some music theory but dont be ruled by it, learn some of the rules then youcan break them ;P ) i thought this was great advice and dija states this same principle in his tutorials when he mentions accidentals.

i have a link here for you guys to a little piece of free software which gives you graphic displays of chords, scales etc which should help you out.

great tutorials dija, keep up the great work

Dude - part 3 blew my mind lol

Inversions always get me a little confused, but you explained it well so i just need to watch it a few more times

also will you be doing anything on how to move from 1 key to another key? I cant remember what its called, but i find it facinating but have always struggled with the "whys and hows" of it. I do it naturally SOMETIMES but a solid understanding of that would be cool

thanks

yeah i will cover key changes. i'm not a theory guru but i've been through the courses and i have the book and i understand it. so don't expect great detailed rules and things. i will explain the most basic things. it will be amazing how simple counterpoint actually is when you know the basic rules.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)
