Probably a case of the blind leading the blind here since I'm a beginner as well but that hasn't stopped me sticking my oar in before . Anyways, there definately seems to be a problem with the mix. I'm not exactly listening on an ideal system myself at the moment though either so take what I say with a pinch of salt, but the bass end sounded too heavy in comparison to the rest of the track and I was straining to hear a lot of the hats and samples. I dont think its that the high end stuff was getting swamped, it sounded like it had its own space in the mix, it was just too low in volume. Other than that the track felt to me like it wasn't really flowing, although this could have a lot to do with the mix issue. For example it sounded like there were some pretty erratic volume changes in the sixteenths bass lines (perhaps its clashing with something else?) and it didn't blend with the kick drum to create that nice rolling sound because there was too much of a volume difference between the two. I think if you tried to level out the volumes of the kick and bass to be more even and then used sidechain compression or eq to solve any clashes that occured that would help a lot. Also perhaps a more consistant ride element to the drums would help glue everything together and add some continuity and flow to the track. Just some straight 16th or 32nd closed hats with a little variation here and there or something like that would probably do the trick. Anyway, nice work, hope you find some of my noobish observations useful . |
