hey guys,

started developing an ear for getting some of my drum samples, (mostly djembe's etc) in tune with the track. Just thought id ask for any more pointers in helping me out here.

cheers.

well, almost every sound is going to have a dominant frequency unless it's pure noise, so just try and get that frequency 'in tune' with the key that your track is in.

There are two ways to do this:

1) Open a spectrum analyzer and modulate the pitch of the percussion until it's dominant frequency is a nice integer ratio of the key of the track (ie 3/5, 1/3, 3/4, etc).

2) Do it by ear. Pitch the sound up and down until it sounds good.

If you're listening to your track later and realize that that snare just does *not* sound right, pitch it up or down accordingly.

erm... Just do a pitch analysis in wavelab... it will never be exactly this or that note, but that doesn't matter... It'l give u a very good idea of the general pitch of the sound

oh yeah, a snaredrum should be pitched at 440Hz , by that i mean that if u skin ur snaredrum u have to tighten the new skin untill it reaches 440Hz...

i ve read this in another thread and it worked wonderfully for me... add distortion to your drum and you ll easily hear its pitch, now tune it to the root key of your song, or the 3rd, the 5th, as u wish... then remove the distortion. easy eh!
