Are there any programs that can help me tune samples (drums, percussion etc.) that don't have obvious notes. I've not got perfect pitch, and while I can slightly pitch sounds so they fit better, I'd like to be really anal about my next track and see if tuning everything makes a difference to the the overall sound.
I tried putting my guitar tuning box near my speakers but it didn't really work! |

you can "tune" percussive sound only by ears if i m right cause they don t have a definate pitch ,they might have a fondamental but the harmonics are random and yes it make a big difference imo . |

you could use melody..just import the file you want..double click on it..and it opens a window where the note is displayed....you can right now..just move it up or down..to the ke you need..and everything will be fine...melodyne is killlllaaaa
even for kicks or whatever...

All great responses!
Glitch, I'll check out the app, thanks.
Vegetal - very logical idea, will try this too.
Ahh, I didn't think of using Melodyne, but I like keeping my percussion as midi triggered so I can program fills and breaks easier. I suppose I could just tune it at the end after the song is done.
Not the same topic, but what are you favourite things to thicken up or add sparkle to percussion?
Usually I program the beats then
- Add about 4db blue Antares Tube
- Thin notch EQ to take out some annoying freqs
- Some sounds (mostly snares) I pan hard left, duplicate the track, pan hard right and add a few ms delay to fatten (though this is a bit hit and miss, and mono check creates nasty modulation)
- Use Stylus for hi hats and use the filter cutoff LFO sync'd to tempo to create a nice bouncing effect
- Group some percussive elements to compressor to mellow the dynamics, then send everything to a mild compressor to add some cohesion
-Add a nice sounding reverb with enough predelay and a short tail to let the hit blend creatively to the next (again, usually snares)
-A nice sounding subtle early reflection reverb on the whole percussion group
- Make a new midi track and move every-other hat to the new track, add -5ms delay to one, +5ms to the other to create a mild rocking rush/drag effect.
- A few ghost snares (of a different sample)
- Delete some overlapping samples that clash too much, I don't notice they're missing and it sounds cleaner.
I am finding other peoples percussion to sound very full and rich and mine to always sound a bit tinny.
I bought the Thomas Penton essentials sample disc and I am losing interest in it. Can anyone suggest any other good CDs?
I'm using Stylus a lot but designing my own grooves with the sound menus and getting fairly good results, but I'm not completely satisfied with anything I'm doing at the moment.
Here is an example of my groove, its not great.. I haven't used ALL the points I made but this is essentially what I end up with.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Also, has anyone ever used a 'saturation chain'. I heard some DnB producers use them to thicken up the sound, but they like their distortion a lot more, I don't think that works so well for trance, unless anyone has a different opinion? |

Saturation can always be a nice thing...it ads some harmonics..and if its not overused..
it makes the sound even more clear in the mix or more present..like you want it to...i use nxtasy for this..so the thing with melodyne is simply..
in wich key is your track procuced..do you just consider the bassline to set the key of your track or do you even check with melodyne in wich key your kick is played..even..
if your kick and bass sounds good and harmonic with the right groove etc..you can bounce out your kick and bass togehter to one file..
import it in melodyne..find out the key..and set up all other sounds in the harmonic of that key...
like find out the accords of that key and transpose your percussions to on note that fits in the harmonic...
but honestly...percussions are sounds with less tonal definition..
so i think you will not achieve much better results if you set them in key...
just consider a rock band that is playing all their tracks in different keys with the same drumset..
but maybe it takes a good effect..just try...so you can find out the key of every sample and transpose it right in melodye to a key that fits in your track...
then you can save it and import it in a sampler or steight in your arrangement...
but if you wanna use foreign samples..and you don`t know in wich key they are played..melodyne is the way to go..
i will write my diploma thesis about melodyne and widi audio..
to achieve some specific information on how about realtime audio to midi processes work..like you take a mic...on stage...start some beatboxing...record it in your sequencer...
turn it in realtime to midi with melodyne or widi audio..and trigger battery with midis for some drums or synth sounds..ok..i know its offtopic...but would be pretty cool..
to stay on stage, and just sing psychedelic grooves to your track...
convert them in realtime to midi and trigger some rob papen blue or predator sounds or whatever with it..endless posibilities..oh man..why did i say this..

tuning is the key for music like hard techno (with a 909),you can make the beat so much more groovy, but with psytrance you can find samples that fit well toghether from the start with a bit of equing it s ok ,but in good production all sound are well tuned/equed .it s not a problem if they are not in key (they have no key for me) they just have to sound good together . |

i use guitar rig on master channel for all this kinda stuff , but i think its not realy effecting nothing to tune the percussion like this , if it fit by ear its good enough and even better then "correct" pitch that sound not as good as original about audio samples sure it helps much
