I just went to my last Tsunami party on Friday, February 14th. I will never go to another one.

Tsunami used to be a good organizer. Between them and Synthetic Sadhus, New York had a better than decent trance scene. I think the competition between them kept them both working at a high level.

Now Sadhus is gone and Tsunami has been going downhill for the last year or more. I went to their Halloween Party. It was just horrible. The headline act, Antidote, didn't play. We payed full price just for local DJ's the whole night. The party was supposed to go till 7 or 8. It was shut down by the venue security at 4 AM!!!! The security were complete assholes, not letting anybody sit down anywhere, and kicking everybody out (threatening violence if necessary) four hours before the party was supposed to end. What a ripoff!

After that, I avoided Tsunami but decided to give them one more chance with this party. First of all, the venue: TINY dancefloor, totally packed with people, no room to dance. The entire building (a converted church) was freezing cold. The security were complete assholes. My friend had an international student ID but they wouldn't accept it: they demanded a passport or other government-issued ID (this was JUST TO GET IN (18+), not even to drink alcohol!). The deco wasn't psychadelic at all. The venue was a hot gay nightclub in Chelsea which is packed every weekend no matter what's playing, which meant that more than half the people there weren't even trancers or ravers, but CLUBBERS!! Lots of gay club hoppers, lots of straight slimeballs trying to pick up girls. Hey, Tsunami: THAT IS NOT THE TRANCE VIBE AT ALL!

More problems: Parasense didn't even play! Astral showed up but they're getting old anyway--we're not exactly talking about the cutting edge in trance, here. The rest of the time was filled by local DJ's. Once again, the party was stopped early, this time at 6 am instead of the promised 8 am. Nonetheless, we still had to pay full price ($32) for one of the worst parties I've ever been to.

Basically, this is what I've come to expect from Tsunami parties: lies, lies, and more lies! Acts cancelling at the last minute (with no warning), parties shut down prematurely, an obnoxious "club" crowd, asshole security. No trance vibe, no PLUR, just the dark, evil bullshit that seems to be consuming the whole country and the whole world.

Luckily all is not lost in NY. Omnitribe is still throwing good parties, and Hommega is not bad either, although a little bit unreliable. But until Tsunami gets their act together, finds a good venue, brings the acts that they promise to bring, and rediscovers the real trance spirit, I'm not wasting another penny on their parties, and I recommend nobody else do either.

back in the day Tsunami was the shit, i would go every week to their events, lately i havent been likeing anyones parties even synthetic went down with some BS for music,as far as mixing the trance scene with the rest of the world i dont mind,we have so little women in our scene and we need more to come dance or convert to psychedelia, anyway i understand your concern with the slimelight cus i used to dj there years back it was fun yet the crowd would usually yell at me to the point id down tempo from full on to housey trance.
Anyway i do enjoy opening up the music for club people but i dont think paps really gets them moving, you really have to stick to artists like man with no name wich is not my flavor yet as a dj you must supply the music they want to hear, actually something people should recognise.

p.s. i love the way jason disses out israelis, that shit cracks me up boom @#$%en shankar dude, im israeli by the way

p.p.s. if i was djing at a party and people threw things at me id smash a mixer over there head, bottom line you wanna be animals deal with it, im surprised the bouncers at Atmos didnt thow them out.heh

please people this is a legit thread but don't turn it into anything personal. I already had to edit the subject line and part of illusions message. Feel free to write whatever you want but just keep it clean and respectful. Expect to see an official explanation from John Emmanuel here very soon.

OK that was sooner then I thought.

Here is what John Emmanuel from Tsunami has to say about what happened:

"Here is what happened:
PARASENSE (Alex and Victore) got in touch with the agency handling all the visas for the US General Consulate in Moscow the beginning of January. They were told that it would take 3 weeks. I send them an official invitation and some other documentation. As late as last Wednesday, the 12th they were assured, that they would be receiving their passports back with a valid visa the following day. We had plane bookings for them to travel on Thursday, the 13th, and the Consulate knew about it. On Wednesday they were told, that due to the Orange Alert and a impending war there were delays, but they would be getting their passports on Thursday. We changed all their flights to a Friday flight. On Thursday they were told that they should be back first thing Friday morning, and go straight to the airport. But as of today, Monday, they still don't have their passports back from the US General Consulate, event though they have to fly to Greece in a few days for an other gig.
This are the facts how I have been told they are. I have myself been in touch with the US State Department about it, as well as with the US Embassy in Moscow, and every single angle confirms the other. PARASENSE had already spent money on the visa (US$200, which in Russia is a lot of money), as well as we on various non-refundable items.

For who-ever tries to critizise us because of the above, please see things into perspective.. We are in our 7th year, we have put on between 110-150 events, mostly, but not only NY area and in Israel. Of those parties, in 1998 one third headliner was unable to show up due to a health emergency, in 2001 one headlining main act was unable to leave Israel due to a strike at the airport, and in 2002 one second headliner was not able to fly, since he was not aware he needed a visa, and his label (BNE) though he had a valid visa.
IN these 7 years we have flown in between 220=250 artists, most of them we were the first ones to bring to this country, and many of these we have brought them in up to 7 times.

I am personally very disappointed about PARASENSE, since this is the third time I am trying to have them (this was the first time they were on he flyer though, since it was confirmed on every level). We will try it again.

99%+ of the party goers were happy we had a rocking party and were extremely understanding and supportive.

Instead on focussing on the nagy inconveniences, how about if the so called promoters would look at it the way we see it:

Months ago many voices were saying that psy trance in the US was dead. We always said that trance as we know it is here to stay. The fact that psy trance got and filled America's newest and hottest top of the line main stream venue even before it's official opening, proves that we are right. I would also like to add on that we don't know anybody else who would have been able to pull it off.
I also would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who came, had fun, an who's comments and actions continue to enforce our believes and convictions, and help us gather the energy to higher the bar."

This is what Parasense has to say:

"Dear friends from TSUNAMI and all trance-heads in the USA, despite our great desire to perform in New York, we were not able to get US entrance visas, though we applied for them long in advance of due date. Because of high terrorist alert in the US, as well as the impeding danger of war, our passports still have not been returned to us by the US Consulate in Moscow. Until early Friday morning it was still looking like it would all resolve itself in a way that would allow us to catch our, several times re-arranged, flights. However, we were out of luck, no matter how hard we tried.
We as well as TSUNAMI had already incurred sizable expenses towards this gig that none of us wanted to miss. We are, however, looking forward to be performing with TSUNAMI in the nearest future, not only in New York, but also in other parts of your great country. Keep up the spirit. From Russia with Love, Parasense (Alex&Zolod)"

I apologize if my comments in the first post were a bit over the top. I recognize that Parasense not showing up was unavoidable given the circumstances (and mind you, I never suggested that it was due to deliberately false advertising), but I guess I just needed to vent some frustration over the fact that the last two Tsunami parties I went to were deeply disappointing. The Halloween party, in particular, was an incredibly negative experience. Now, I wasn't able to attend Tsunami's New Year's party and maybe that one was great--I don't know. I do remember that before that party Tsunami sent out an e-mail promising to make a fresh new start with the New Year, and that's why I wanted to go the Valentine's Day party, in order to give them a second chance despite the fact that the Halloween Party was such a mess. I think it's just human psychology to assume that if you're disappointed by somebody twice in a row, that there's some kind of trend there.

Part of my frustration also has to do with my memories of how good Tsunami parties USED to be. One party, in particular, about two years ago at The World in Times Square with X-Dream and James Monro was just absolutely incredible. The World was a fantastic venue, roomy, two levels, seperate chill-out space with great ambient sounds, psychadelic video art on the monitors. I guess they couldn't book that space again after some fool OD'd on something, maybe Ecstasy or meth, I'm not sure, but I remember seeing him carried out of the place, unable to walk and close to passing out. It's a shame, though, because it was a great venue.

I realize that organizing parties is an incredibly difficult and risky (financially and otherwise) undertaking. I have friends who are organizers in other countries. What I'm asking for, begging for, in fact, is simply for Tsunami to try to return to the quality they had about two years ago. That means:

A) Find a good venue. A good venue is one that gives you enough room to dance, has enough toilets that you don't have to wait for half an hour to pee, has enough people selling water that you don't have to wait in line for forty minutes to get one bottle, and has security that understands that armed gang members don't come to Trance parties and treats guests with the appropriate respect.

B) Stop recycling the same old golden oldies. Look, I still love Infected, Hallucinogen, Astral, X-Dream, S.U.N. and all the rest of the early pioneers, and I hope they all visit New York once a year. But Trance has GROWN and I think we should grow with it. Besides which, younger, less-famous acts are often cheaper to bring.

C) Don't promise more than you can deliver. Look, I can understand if the venue demands you shut a party down at 6 am instead of 8 or 9. All I'm asking is: don't tell people 8 and then spring 6 on them while they're waiting to get in the door. If it's 6, tell us 6. We'll understand. But nobody wants to feel like they've been misled.

This is about getting back to the roots of what makes Trance a COMMUNITY rather than simply a business undertaking. Trancers can forgive a lot from organizers as long they feel that organizers are still part of the spirit and treat their customers as FRIENDS and GUESTS rather than just as dollar signs.

i dont buy it..... and JEG is not being completely truthful, he isnt lying, just never revealing the cards to his customers, till after the straight flush.... tsunami needed to refund the people for paying a full venue price, why should they get this money eventhough parasense didnt show? is anyone forgetting that we are the consumers and therefore should not receive any less than what we pay for. im sorry i dont soundt shanti shanti and trance loving money giving kinda guy, but in this situtation, tsunami can sugarcoat all they want, they still came out bad for not being honest, AS ALWAYS!!!!!!!           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."
