Elad mate ,can u eleborate more on the harmonic cutting through ocatves mathamaticly an the theroy o why such surgical use improves the bassline .
I mean I just use n12 s series and gliss
with n12 I knock out 350hz, 2.2 & slightly at 30hz
with gliss I apply the Hp at what ever is needed dependin on the note. Eg e1 - 40hz
how do u go about it mate?

first thing the patch in source can make all the difference (for example if it doesnt have 110hz then cut there will do almost nothing)
i think that mostly the cuts doesnt necessarily make the bassline sound better rather the hole mix (leave more room for other sounds too)
sometime it does take out the "boxiness" out
some freqs i would check deep surgical cut for bass:
50hz - add/remove air
100hz-150hz - some mud here can be cleaned (or boost for extra power if it lacks)
200hz-400hz-800hz can resonate in un pleasing ways...
HP by note is good idea to not ruin the fundamental of the sound (if need HP at all.. shelves works better for me this days)

cheers for your imput twizak, I spose a great deal is in the synthises and the "abnormal routings" that I'm startin to use.
But just thought if mathematics is the langauge of nature i thought there might of been a mathmatical rule
I spose also it all down to your ears and your room whilst bien true & critical to yourself.

I thought that surgical EQ was more about the ringing harmonics of the different waveforms (dependent on the root note) as opposed to 'cut at this range' - I might be doing it wrong as my EQ knowledge is still fairly small, but when I am beginning to write a bass line and I pick a root note, I open up a spectrum analyzer and I can easily see the different harmonics
I then put in very tight notches directly over the major harmonics (usually up to and including the 7th series), then play with turning those points on and off to see how that effects the sound - then HP around 20-30.
Anyone been using Ableton Live's Operator synth for bass? Seems that you could really easily completely cut the different harmonics that you don't like instead of doing the surgical EQ? |

hehe i posted this track here long time ago asking how to do this kind of bass, very deep plastic strong bass, and overall nice track. I also wanted to know how to do this lead

Set the filter's envelope with a very fast decay setting and no sustain, dial in a high modulation index on the filter and play a somewhat low note, (that sounds to me like an E1...I think).
As for the lead, try a formant filter, or if you don't have one, set a Saw waveform LFO to run well within the audio frequency range and apply some FM on a resonant (bandpass preferably) filter with a high resonance setting.
Failing all that, try a bitcrusher to get them vowels.

Yeah, I recently switched to Ableton and Operator. Its a really great tool where you can decide on every harmonic.
I recently bought a video course only for Operator where that and the FM part of Operator are explained.
I havent had the time yet tho to try and build a good bass sound with it...but its definitely the next thing I'm gonna try(still very new to production) |
