HI
I am somewhat new to Los Angeles, but I've been a party-goer DJ for some time now.
I've been checking out local events over the past few weeks, and there is definitely a scene here.
What I would like to introduce is a night of really underground, classic dance music. I'm thinking Acid and Psy, more on the party vibe than relentless darkness. There was a night and label in the UK called Havok that used to do events that were small, close-knit, and rocking. I guess what I'm looking for is that dark, dirty, "squat" party vibe that I've experienced in London.
It seems like venue & music would be the teo biggies. I have a venue in mind that was recently used for a party, but no sound system.
I think visuals would be covered. I do motion graphics stuff, and I've been thnking about how to cheaply produce trippy visuals for a while.
So what advice can you all offer re: Los Angeles, venues, problems, etc.?
My goal is to break even if possible, no delusions of grandeur here. I have never asked for money when I DJ, it's more about hearing my favorite music LOUD and introducing others to it.
Cheers
Jesse

right on, man we're with you. LA venues are either expensive (after hours nightclubs for example), restricted (bars, restaurants - have to be out by 2am or so) or unlicensed (warehouses, buildings not commercially zoned).... of course there have to exceptions to the norm. all the best and hope to be dancing and trancing all night long with you.
