Trying to figure out how this lead is made

Hi there. To me that Psysex lead sounds like an Access Virus lead that was treated with a bitcrusher (prob. Logic's) to give it that digital 'bite'. Cubase SX also has a bitcrusher, but i've heard that it isn't as good as logic's.

This is a shameless plug, but using the techniques in this thread I finished the above snippet into the semblance of a song (here: http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/42539/forum/26 ).

I use mostly osc sync on Z3ta, V-station, and Monologue (not a bad little synth!) to get the leads, cranking the mod wheel routed to filter cutoff to get the 'singing' feel. Bass is Trilogy (mmm, Trilogy).

I think this sound is made by combining a sine wave with pulse wave with 50% FM and pulse wave LFO. If you want to synthesis it yourself you should be very precise with the LFO, FM and Resonance amount..

i was thinking about the AM part of the sound.,
there seems to be some ring modulation going on.,

so i thought you could do something like this as follows:

use a synth with 2 filters
crank the resonance up on both.,
set the filters to the same frequency

now set up one controller to controll both filers equaly,.
and then set up another controller to controll the filters in reverse (so, when one goes up, the other goes down)

put everything through a healthy dose of distortion.,

play heavily with the controllers.,

this could get you such a sound i think,.,

havent tried it out yet tho.,

yeah.,., i just tested it on my nord and it works like a charm.,

ooh, and i forgot to say, the filters should be paralel and i used bandpass filters.,

there are some other subtle things in this sound like the envelopes settings., (also, it's played realy realy violently !)

and you can go wild with things like controlling the difference with velocity etc, etc.,

but what i described above will get you that formant AY-YA-AY-YA type of sound.,

tweak away!.,

so you have one controller that gives you the typical "wah wah wah" of a mod-wheel controlled filter, but then another controller to seperate the two filters?

interesting!

are you using bandpass filters?

I will tweak around on my softsynths and see if I can do this.

How can you tell that it's played violently?

If nothing else this thread has helped me understand how you synth-experienced people listen to sounds and identify what's going on. Fascinating.

Thanks!

Billy - I'll check out the tips you mentioned there. It's funny how when you get a good sound, oftentimes it's within this tiny range of parameters, like tweaking one or the other will make it all come together or fall apart.

"so you have one controller that gives you the typical "wah wah wah" of a mod-wheel controlled filter, but then another controller to seperate the two filters? "

well, the filter separation does the formant AYAYA thing.,
the 'equal' controller just gives more controll over where the center is of the two separating filters.,

yes, i'm using bandpass filters

"How can you tell that it's played violently?"

cause the sound changes radically but it doesnt sound periodical.,., so i assume someone is realy realy weaking those knobs

"I will tweak around on my softsynths and see if I can do this. "

as long as they can controll 2 filters in different directions from the same controller you should be able to get some results.,

"If nothing else this thread has helped me understand how you synth-experienced people listen to sounds and identify what's going on. Fascinating. "

well, experimenting a lot realy helps cause a lot of sounds can be made through different means.,
also, for me, hanging around with 'modular' people realy taught me a lot about synthesis., some very very interesting stuff is possible when you have a lot of controll.,

did you know, for instance, that you can make a saw wave with a sine oscilator, a lot of ring modulators and a high-pass filter?.,

anyway, getting off topic.,

i'll post a link to a screenshot soon so you can see the basic idea of what i mean.,

"It's funny how when you get a good sound, oftentimes it's within this tiny range of parameters, like tweaking one or the other will make it all come together or fall apart. "

this is very true.,
that's why i think it's important to understand and experience a lot so you can at least know what's happening and if it doesnt sound like you expect you KNOW you must be close so you can tweak the little bits to get what you want.,

Awesome! (screen shots help SO much).

I will have a whack at this when I get home and post any successes.
