If i understand your question correctly, you can select the object in the editing window, and use , "<ctrl> - <d>" (duplicate) or "<ctrl> - <k>" (multiple copies). I'm not sure if it's <ctrl> or <alt>, but it's one of those for sure. The first option copies the object head-to-tail and the second option makes multiple head-to-tail copies, BUT when you chance something in one, it gets changed in all the other copies as well (this is not the case with the first option).
