Trouble with the very low-end

Well guys, a huge quantity of foam has arrived and I've done up my room! Huge huge difference to stereo field and I went straight back to my bass, redid the EQ in about 20 seconds and it sounds loads better. My god I can actually hear what I'm doing!

I haven't tried it on the killerwoofer, but I've got a feeling it'll be great. I cut out all the hum and lumps that I couldn't put my finger on before and it's much more clean sounding.

Moral of this story - buy foam!

What did you do for foam? Did you buy "professional" stuff or improvise?

I'm curious about relatively cheap ways to do sound insulation, the professional foam that is sold in soundproofing packages is ridiculously overpriced.           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

By the way, the foam was on the way anyway, I didn't buy it to solve any bass issues - it was purely for the stereo image - I was thinking I would need basstraps and thicker wedges for the lowend, but this stuff works perfectly. I think it's because there is an air gap between the surface and the foam that is trapping lower frequencies. I had it cut to the size of the windows in my window bay, I've not stuck it anywhere, it's just um, wedged in place.

I called a number of places I found on the web that specialise in studio acoustic foam and let me tell you - they are VERY expensive. For what you get, it's a joke. I'm sure they think studio=money!

So I called a place in london that makes foam as packing materials and they can do exactly the same foam, but much cheaper. I just bought 2 bulk sheets, got them to cut it and I asked for all the offcuts.

cost me £100 delivered and I've done 6 windows at 45"x45" and the ceiling above me at 100" x 65" and had a few weird shaped left over bits to do around the desk

Bargain.

So it's not labelled as 'pro' stuff, but its identical.

Oh believe me, I have NO cash. Don't be a fool and spend money you don't have to feed a hobby (read: addiction!)

It's been good for me buying things slowly, that way I always learn what I've bought instead of having loads of new toys and not learning anything.

Hi, for under 100 dollars you can build some decent high-density mineralwool panels that look great and work like a charm. I'd try that first and listen if you still need the snake-oil impregnated accoustic foam

There's a lot of usable info to be found on the web. try seaching for "rockwool" and "super chunk". I just lined my studio with high-density rockwool, built two super chunk basstraps and another ceiling trap, a bit like in the links below. The results are amazing: even at a crazy volumes you can practically hear nothing outside of the room and inside the room it sounds really controlled, so i can really hear what i'm doing. PM me if you have any specific questions.
