hey im having trouble synthesisng a good wind up sound. im after something like a motor engine starting up raising pitch over a couple of bars.
the method i have been using is trying different sounds in different instruments using a band pass filter and raising the cutoff with a high resonance while modulating pitch but i just cant get it to sound good.
any advice would be greatly appreciated thx in advance look forward to ur response ;

for the example, pick this synth
http://www.jxplugins.co.uk/download.php3?file=JX220.exe
in the subosc section, select noise type, and play as you described
to get a wind sound, its allways much easier to do it using noise generators, eh?
(and if mods don't mind) welcome aboard

Try a synth with a mod matrix (Albino or z3ta+ for example). Now assign one of the lfo's to the main pitch and /or filter cuttof/res , choose the saw, sync the lfo's rate and choose the rate you want --- 8/1 , 4/1 , 2/1 depends on how long you want the windup.
you can also assign other lfo's to PWM or something else to make it more wacko at the peak
you can also do it by assigning one of the envelopes to do that , then you have more control of the up and down it goes, but if you want a straight windup the lfo would be better I think.
Peace

i'll bring a synth1 vst patch wich sounds like the "wind fx" if it will help...
to make things very simple
start a one OSC patch, make the OSC play the noise
put the filter at 0, and make it a LP
in the filter env, make the atack be as long as necessary and the amount at full
the smae can also be made with the amp env, but not really necessary
  roll a joint or STFU :) |

yes, and a lot modulating the filter can add more variation...

u can also try modulating the freq instead of the filter cutoff, in my experience this causes much more outspoken windups (or gold rays ) |

I'm guessing you don't mean "wind" as in "the wind blows" but "wind" as in "winding up my clock". Right?
If so, make some nice long pads in one note/chord, export, load into Sound Forge or any other editor, apply a a pitch bend over the whole file. Load back into sequencer. This works with any long continuous sounds ...
If you you didn't mean that, I'll shut up.

BP filter is better than LP for this IMHO |

Here's my favourite technique for getting good pitch-ups/risers/goldrays...
Set LFO (of whichever synth has the capability to) to work on overally pitch of instrument at something like 8/1 with linear movement (i.e. not sine, triangle, random oscillation etc.)
this gives you room to create whatever sound you want and it should still rise.
my favourite is using 2 oscillators saw and square, each panning individually, tiny bit of unison, abit of reverb... followed by distortion and highpassing... if you're feeling rhythmic, add a gate (and maybe a touch of ping delay )
Feels just like cooking hehe!
By the way, a wind up for me is normally:
a. a prank
b. an hour after a bad vindaloo
Peace

Bahhh haa haa. Nice one Fregle. If you got the "gold rays" reference you get a gold star for paying attention!! Don't forget the "cuts" too.

the simple way:
use lfo on pitch of oscilator. and just play with it `till u like it.
i also did some by taking a long bass note, exported it to audio and gave it a pitch envelope going up. it did the job for me.
if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...
