hi there
trying to achieve a particular effect with my kicks at the moment. basically im wanting the first peak ( the high frequencies) to be fairly small but then i want the kicks lower freqs to increase so the most of the dB peak of the kick is in the lower freqs. can i do this with compression? if so what are some guidelines i can follow? or any other suggestions to get this?

try a equalizer....
cut the high freq and boost the low freq..
though sometimes not so easy to get a good result..
you can also edit the sample...
reduce the peak by lowering its amplitude, and increase the rest.... and maybe lower the pitch of the kick a little
so you dont need to Eq or compress... often if you are happy with a sample its best to edit the sample manually, instead of making a complicated process of it... cause when you use a eq its hard to get it as narrow as you want it... (though its worth trying a FFT filter, they are very narrow) |

EQ and compression, and in that order. The compressor will emphasize the loudest frequencies, and with the EQ you can cut untill the frequencies you want are the loudest frequencies. |

i think soundforge has an amp envelope option .use that - work with the attack length. |
