The review:

A big compilation from YSE this time, it caught my attention mainly because of CD1, which has some great clubtracks on it. Anyway, track by track then:

CD1

Track 1: We start off with a relatively slow, fat funky track with some lush pads and overall a big clubby feel to it. Nice opener, solid stuff.

Track 2: Simon And Shaker remix UDG's 'Give Me Fierce' and turn it into quite a clubby track with a nice bouncy bassline and percussion. Good way to fill in a progressive set. A good track.

Track 3: A great track by Chriss Source with a clubby vibe, a wobbly bassline and some orchestral samples. Works wonders on the dancefloor, a straight clubwonder. What's strange is that on the Beat Delight compilation there was a track exactly like this called: Chriss Source vs. Marc O Tool - Restrospective. I'm guessing there's a mixup of titles here and this is actually supposed to be Retrospective instead of Gate Twenty One. Anywhow, a great track, which manages to stay in your head long after you've heard it.

Track 4: Really clubby vibe again, nice bassline, some vocal sampling and overal pretty commercial sounding, but still underground. Strange, but a solid pounding bassdrum and bassline with an excellent flow make up for a good track.

Track 5: One of the least interesting tracks here. Quite minimal, housy atmosphere with some samples and a drilling bassdrum and bassline that gets repetitive very quickly.

Track 6: This is more into the clubby vibe again and this is deep to the bone. Some sampling again with lots of echo this time. Overall, a nice track, great for filling material in a DJ-set.

Track 7: More melodic this one, takes some time to build and then explodes around the 4:30 mark with a big break and at 5:00 you're good to go again. Great stuff. I don't know the original myself, but this is a good track and no mistake.

Track 8: Another deep clubber. Again it takes some time to build and never really changes a lot, but still enough to keep the dancefloor interested. This one is great for DJ-sets again, just some plain clubbing, and not too pronounced on melody or sampling or anything, just a pleasant little groover.

Track 9: Takes some time to get going again. Has a minimal feel to it once more, in the vein of track 5. Not one of my faves here, but definately not bad.

Ok, on to CD2 then. This one is comprised of more 'familiar' artists for anyone into progressive psytrance. Morax, Liquid Soul, Fog among leave their mark here.

Track 1: James Monro & Dickster groove off here and this is a monstertrack. Great stuff, especially once it gets going. You might have heard this on Iboga's 'Hibernation'.

Track 2: Chocolate of Ryan Halifax is next, and this is a typical Halifax track with that housy deep groove in it. More laidback than some of his other tracks, great stuff. Also released on the 'Kodama' compilation from Plusquam Records, so you might know it from there.

Track 3: Greed gives an Atmos track the remix-treatment. This one was released on Greed's album on ACDC. A massive remix to an already great track, this one is a lot less 'light' than Atmos' original. Nice one.

Track 4: Liquid Soul gets confused and this is a good track. Melodic and a great vibe as usual. This one was also released on the Amarasya 2 compilation so you might know it from there. A good track.

Track 5: Antix remix Reservoir from Vibrasphere and make it a clubby groover with a good vibe overall. Quite deep and certainly in line with their sound on Twin Coast Discovery. I'm liking this lots. You might have heard this before on the Vibrasphere single.

Track 6: Andre Absolut gives Cloud Buster a big fat clubbier sound and does a great job here. A great track. Released also on Tribal Vision's 'Street Art' if I'm not mistaken.

Track 7: The Symphonix bros come up with a deep track under their True Lies moniker. Quite clubby in sound with lots of effects. A massive track. Also released on the Amarasya 2 compilation from Blue Tunes.

Track 8: Morax makes a stomper here with an absolute big vibe to it. Nice sounds, great build-up and it manages to stay in your head a long time. (At least it did in my head). Great stuff, also released on the G-Spot compilation from Domo Records.

Track 9: Fog finishes off here with a nice deep, more relaxed vibe. Also released on his debut album on ZMA Records. Nice stuff and a solid finisher.

Conclusion time:

Well, this compilation is great. CD1 delivers some really stomping clubby tracks, so if you're into that more mainstream progressive kind of sound as well as the psyprog scene, then you're in for a treat with this one. (Even if you already might have a lot of the tracks of CD2 on other compilations/albums). And for those of you who like progressive and don't have a lot of the tracks on CD2 already, get ready to be amazed by this great selection of tracks. Anyway, a solid compilation in my book. Good mastering from the 4CN studios once more and the best news is that I've already got my hands on Volume 3 of this series too, and I'm happy to say that one is even better than this. A full review of that one soon. As for this one: 8,5/10 from me.
