While having a great time remembering Samothraki's great sets, I couldn't forget Tsuyoshi's wonderful set there. I remembering when his set ended just thinking "wow, I needed that"... What was it that made it so wonderful? Was it the sheer power of the music? No. Many full-on acts give more punch than he does. Was it the goaish emotions? Well, his set was good, but on the emotional level, it wasn't nearly as touching as most good goa sets I've heard.
But one thing Tsuyoshi does better than anyone else is giving that overwhelming tribal feeling. I thought of the acts that are considered tribal today... it's not even close to that powerful rush of percussion that Tsuyoshi played. There are still moments of those tribal feelings in the music I hear today - but it's as a part of something else, not a stand-alone quality.
I miss that.
I feel it's time for a new tribal dawn in the trance scene, because that's something that no other music can do quite as well - excluding (maybe) breakbeat. To all of you DJs out there that remember going nuts to some Snake Thing or Prana, keep it in mind, that's all I ask. Of course, I'll hope for more
