Travelling and playing gigs - any advice?

Hello producers!

I'm planning to be travelling around europe the middle of next year. I'm interested in getting gigs over there, but I'm a little bit worried about travelling with my laptop, sound card and any other gear that I need. I'm worried that it'd get stolen or something... but I guess I would have to keep it in my sight all the time.

I'm imagining that my trip will be a week or two travelling around, and then getting to a gig (if I'm lucky to get them) to play, then a bit more travel, etc.

So, can anyone who has travelled and played gigs in between travelling give any tips or recommendations on the best way to go about it? How to secure your hardware, etc?

I'm coming over from Australia, so I pretty much need to bring everything I would need for a set.

Any advice, thoughts, etc appreciated

Thanks!
Dwight.

before you do this try to get some PR and make your self at least a little known... if you want some gigs, otherwise it might be difficult.... (though maybe you already have a "name")

about the gear, yeah its a risk you have to take, if you have a good bag that fits everything i think it will be okej, just dont go around showing people your gear

my advice, make some connections with people in europe that shares your interest.. then you have some places to go and meet likeminded people! and maybe you just want to play for free.. if you got the right music its more than possible!

though i dont fit your description in answering this post, but i do anyway

cheers...

Just a suggestion, bring with you an external harddrive with all your music programs installed and all your songs (keep it separate from your laptop). So if anything should happen to your laptop you have the possibility to borrow a laptop and go through with your gig.

Hope you pull this off. Best of luck!!!

to achieve 'financial security', you can insure the value of your gear. look around for local insuration companies. this procedure is also often done by photographers. of course, this won't secure your 'gig-availability'. here, blizzard's idea is cool. an even cooler idea would be to set up secured web space where you can download your essential files in case you need them again

best wishes!

And don't place your laptop on the speakers before they're powered on... Unless you want a really quick formating that is.
